People reportedly missing are probably the ones involved in Sambhal violence: Police

Sambhal (UP), Feb 17 (PTI) People reportedly missing from Sambhal are probably the ones who were involved in the November 24, 2024 violence in the district that claimed four lives, a senior police official said on Monday.

Speaking to reporters here, Sambhal SP Krishan Kumar said, "There is a discussion of exodus ('palaayan') in Sambhal. Around 2,500 to 3,000 people were involved in the violence that took place in Sambhal on November 24. Policemen were pelted with stones and also fired at."

So far, 79 people have been arrested and posters of some people have been put up at public places and photos released on social media.

"The people missing from here are probably the same people who were involved in the violence that day," Kumar said, adding normal life is prevailing with children going to schools, markets open and "any talk of exodus is absolutely wrong".

The Sambhal SP's remarks came a day after AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi claimed that such an "atmosphere of fear and oppression has been created in Sambhal that people are being forced to leave their homes".

In a post on X in Hindi, Owaisi on Sunday said, "An atmosphere of such fear and oppression has been created in Sambhal that people are being forced to leave their homes. The government must stop targeting Sambhal's Muslims and punishing them collectively, steps for reassurance must be taken as soon as possible."

"Modi and the BJP have repeatedly spread false rumours that Hindus were 'undertaking exodus' from some areas, and each time that was proven false. Here the police and the administration themselves are admitting that Muslims are being forced to migrate, so why is the government silent?," Owaisi said.

He also shared a media report in his X post.

Responding to the allegations levelled by Owaisi, the SP said that in the violence, 2,500 to 3,000 people were involved, in which only 79 people have been arrested, the rest can be automatically calculated.

"Those who were involved in the violence must have seen their photo in posters. On the basis of that, those people cannot be here. But, there is no fear of any kind among the general public," he said, and added that the criminals should always be afraid of the police.

"I want to assure you that no innocent will be harassed, but strict action will be taken against those who are guilty, those who have attacked the police," the SP said.

Four people had died while several others, including security personnel, were left injured in the November 24 violence, even as the incident snowballed into a major political controversy finding echo in the state assembly as well as Parliament. PTI COR NAV ZMN

Mayawati raises concerns over 'foreign influence' in Indian elections

Lucknow, Feb 17 (PTI) Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Monday raised concerns over alleged foreign interference in Indian elections, citing reports that USD 21 million was allegedly sent by an US agency under the pretext of increasing voter participation.

"The news from America is quite shocking as a massive amount of USD 21 million has reportedly been provided in the name of increasing voter participation in India. The people of the country must remain cautious and question whether this is an interference in free and fair elections, and if so, who has been benefiting from it," she said in a press note issued by the party here on Monday.

Her reaction came after the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) led by billionaire Elon Musk announced a series of expenditure cuts, including USD 21 million allocated for "voter turnout in India." The DOGE in a post on X on Saturday announced cancelling many programmes costing hundreds of millions of taxpayers' dollars. The department said, "US taxpayer dollars were going to be spent on the following items, all (of) which have been cancelled..."

The list included USD 486 million in grants to the Consortium for Elections and Political Process Strengthening including USD 21 million for "voter turnout in India".

In the press note issued by the party on Monday, the BSP chief also said the "overwhelming dominance of the BJP and AAP under government protection" made conditions unfavourable for her party in the Delhi elections.

"BSP members fought with full strength in the Delhi elections, just like they did in Haryana. However, due to the strong political maneuvering and deceptive promises of the opposing parties, as well as the overwhelming dominance of BJP and AAP under government protection, BSP could not achieve the expected results," she said.

Despite the disappointing results in the Delhi polls where her party could not win a single seat, Mayawati urged BSP workers not to feel discouraged and remain committed to their cause, emphasising the party's ideological foundation and historical successes.

She said the "BSP has always been a party of struggle" and has achieved significant political milestones through its dedication to the principles of B R Ambedkar.

"Everyone must remember that BSP is an Ambedkarite party that has gained many political and electoral successes through struggle. Particularly in Uttar Pradesh, during its four terms in government, the BSP has worked extensively for the dignity, self-respect, and economic liberation of the Bahujan community.

"Due to this, caste-based, capitalist, and communal forces have continuously conspired against the BSP and its leadership, using every possible tactic ”including political manipulation, financial coercion, and false propaganda ”to weaken the party. However, we must not be disheartened but continue working tirelessly towards achieving power through the right to vote, as envisioned by Dr B R Ambedkar," she asserted.

The BSP drew a blank in the Delhi polls held earlier this month.

The BJP won a comfortable majority (48 seats) in the elections to the 70-member assembly, ousting the Aam Aadmi Party from power after a decade. PTI KIS TIR

Sarpanch murder case: Ask Munde whether he will resign as minister, Ajit Pawar tells scribes

Nashik, Feb 17 (PTI) Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar parried questions on the resignation of embattled minister and NCP colleague Dhananjay Munde and asked reporters to field such queries directly to the latter.

Munde is under fire from the opposition and ruling alliance leaders after the former's close aide Walmik Karad was arrested in an extortion case linked to the brutal murder of Beed sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh on December 9.

Speaking to reporters here on Sunday, Pawar said, "Munde claims he has no connection to the case. However, I had tendered my resignation in 2010 as state water resources minister when allegations were levelled against me. Former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri resigned after a train accident. However, many have refused to quit under similar circumstances."

"You should ask Munde whether he will quit citing moral responsibility," he told reporters.

Pawar said the murder of sarpanch Deshmukh was highly condemnable but asserted that various agencies involved in the probe will bring out the truth and spare no one.

The deputy CM also said he was not aware of the recent meeting between Munde and BJP MLA Dhas, who has been seeking the minister's resignation on the Beed murder and has also levelled corruption allegations. PTI COR BNM

Profit booking leading FIIs to sell Indian equities: FM

Mumbai, Feb 17 (PTI) Seeking to assuage concerns over foreign institutional investors (FII) selling Indian equities lately, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday attributed the action to profit booking.

Speaking to reporters in the financial capital, Sitharaman said the Indian economy is one where the investors are bagging better returns which leads to profit booking.

"FIIs also go out when they are able to or in a position to book profits. Indian market today, Indian economy today, has an environment in which investments are also yielding good returns and profit booking is also happening," she said.

It can be noted that FIIs have sold over Rs 1.56 lakh crore of stocks since October last year, including nearly Rs 1 lakh crore in 2025 itself, which has led to a sharp correction on the indices and wiping out investor wealth.

Finance Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey said FIIs are not moving from one emerging market to other, and added that in times of global uncertainties like the one being witnessed right now, they tend to go back to the country of origin, which is mostly the US.

He also hinted that these shifts may be temporary, and added that Indian markets are resilient.

Explaining that apart from demand-supply issues, growth prospects also influence investor behavior, Pandey said India remains the fastest growing large economy and added that the recently announced Budget has a slew of growth-oriented measures.

"We have faced global headwinds in the past, and will continue to face them. But I think India is in a strong position to handle it," he added.

Ajay Seth, Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs, dismissed any idea of a government interference in the market because of the heavy sell-offs, stating that such a move can be carried out only if there is any evidence of market failure, which is not the case at present.

Seth said equities do not function on government policies alone, and added that foreign investors go to developed or bigger markets in periods of uncertainties.

He said that while India has shown resilience when it comes to world events in parts, it is not fully de-coupled either.

To a question on the US posturing on tariffs, Sitharaman said India is working towards becoming more investor friendly and pointed to recent budget announcements on reforms in customs duties.

India has already taken several measures over the last two years on the duties front with the view to protect local industry and jobs, she said, adding that the safeguard or anti-dumping duties are also periodically reviewed. PTI AA DRR

Consider online classes for law students: Delhi HC to DU

New Delhi, Feb 17 (PTI) The Delhi High Court has asked the DU and Bar Council of India to consider evolving a mechanism with appropriate safeguards and conditions for online classes for students pursuing the law course in the university.

Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma acknowledged that physical attendance carried a distinct value in professional courses but said that the continuous development in technology and artificial intelligence was an opportunity to evolve "effective remote learning mechanisms".

The court made the observations while dismissing a batch of petitions by law students against Delhi University's decision to not allow them to sit in their respective semester examination due to shortage of attendance.

The court refused to interfere on the ground that no relaxation in the aggregate attendance requirement could be granted under writ jurisdiction but nudged the authorities to adopt technological advancements for virtual classes.

"The University of Delhi and the Bar Council of India may also evolve a mechanism to enable the students to attend classes online with the appropriate safeguards and conditions.

"The court is conscious of the fact that in professional courses, physical attendance carries distinct values. However, the continuous development of the technology and Artificial Intelligence presents an opportunity to the experts to evolve effective remote learning mechanisms," said the court in a judgement passed on February 11.

The court stated that its observation was based on the premises that at the time of admission, mobile numbers and e-mail IDs were furnished by students or steps could also be taken to update the same if not provided.

It also emphasised that there should be strict adherence with the practice of notifying the attendance of each student for each month along with the lectures/practicals held subject-wise.

In the era of technological advancement and in order to avoid any objection by the students that they were not timely notified, the Faculty of Law should send such monthly attendance updates via e-mail along with SMS and WhatsApp to students and maintain a record of the same, it added.

The court said the dean of the Faculty of Law, in consultation with the Bar Council of India, might evolve a mechanism for students to make a representation regarding short attendance and the authorities could then take an appropriate decision if the request was found to be genuine.

In the judgement, the court observed that its power under writ jurisdiction was not a tool for granting relief in cases of "manifest disregard of discipline by the students".

"It is essential to maintain the integrity of the L.L.B. professional course and to ensure that students who abide by the rules are not prejudiced by a retroactive relaxation of discipline...To permit such an invocation would not only undermine the integrity of the professional course but also prejudice those students who diligently observe their academic responsibilities," said the court. Vice President calls for revitalization of rural economies through micro industries

Chandigarh, Feb 17 (PTI) Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday called for the revitalization of rural economies through micro industries that add value to agricultural and dairy products.

"There must be evolution of a mechanism in a village or in a cluster of villages where you have micro industries at the farm that add value to the agro produce, that add value to the livestock produced, milk produced. This will help evolve a sustainable society and the nutritional food value will certainly go up.

"What stops us from having entrepreneurial skills to produce ice creams, paneer, sweets, and the like in village clusters? This is very important because it will generate employment and satisfy rural youth," Dhankhar said.

Dhankhar was the chief guest at the inauguration of Advanced Entrepreneurship Skill Development Program (A-EDSP) on "Functional Foods, Neutraceuticals and their Safety" at National Agri-Food and Biomanufacturing Institute in Mohali.

Emphasising that technology must be integrated into farming practices to improve efficiency and productivity, the vice president said, "startups are there in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. They have to trickle to villages now because agriculture produce is lifeline of economy, raw material for industry. And when this takes place, close to the farmland in the rural firmament, evolving as a cluster, economy will take a jump, and people will believe in the farmland."

Urging farmers to stay informed about advancements in technology and its potential benefits, he said, "A farmer is by and large clinging to his tractor. He wants to use the tractor for as long as it can last, ignorant of the fact that new technology is becoming environment-friendly, fuel-efficient, multifunctional, and highly subsidized".

He said there has to be an awareness campaign to tell the farmers that you don't need anybody's help. "You only have to know your inner strength to change your economy to a very high level. Form small groups, market your product at a price of your choice; you can.

"But by and large, I see farm produce is sold when it is not farmers' market, it is buyers' market. The government provides facilities to hold on to the stock by massive warehousing and cooperative movement. I can tell you the farm policies of the government are so helping the farmer.

"The farmer has to know about it. You (premier institutes like NABI, Mohali) can play a great role because we cannot allow that our farmers get anything but the very best.

"No short-change for the farm sector, no short-change for the farmer that has to be our motto. Institutes like yours must have live connect with Krishi Vigyan Kendras, with Institutes of Indian Council of Agriculture Research," he further said.

Dhankhar said interest of farmers is in his heart.

"I am son of a farmer like there was a movie, Son of a Sardar. A son of the farmer will always commit himself to truth," he said.

"The interest of the farmer is in my heart. I know the potential of farmers. I know the potential of the children in farm families. I know the kind of challenges they face right from the beginning.

"During my time the challenges were more, not any longer. We never imagined Indian household will have a toilet, a gas connection, an electricity connection, an internet connection, something like pipe water on the way, a road connectivity, health centre close by. We never thought of that. Good education, it is happening now.

"Therefore, an ecosystem by transforming our education that brings about equality, labels all, and cuts into inequities is in place," he said.

Dhankhar said India's soul resides in its villages, with the rural system serving as the backbone of the nation. The path to a developed India passes through its villages. A developed India is no longer just a dream; it is our goal, he said.

He further said, if we look into our historical past, India was known to be a land of knowledge and wisdom, particularly in science, astronomy and what not. Every aspect of human life finds reflection in our Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas.

"And we are a nation that takes pride in having ancient institutions like Nalanda, Takshashila and the kind. Something happened around 11th or 12th century, and there was a digression. Marauders came, invaders came, and they were reckless in destroying our institutions, Nalanda being one of them.

"Our cultural centres, going to the extent of being so retributive, perversion of a very different kind over our religious centres they built their own. The nation faced it. Then came the British rule.

"Systematically, we got laws that were meant to subserve them. We got education that destroyed ours and created not an ecosystem of full exploitation of our talent. The best part is, we are springing back," he noted.

He also touched upon the significance of research and said, "All institutions in the country will have to pass the litmus test. And the litmus test is -- what impact is being created? In a positive sense, it should be like an earthquake, with the impact being felt...".

While reiterating India's civilizational strength, he stated, "The century belongs to Bharat. This is being doubted by no one except some in our country. My appeal to them, as an Indian, as a Bhartiya, our commitment to our nation, belief in the principle of the nation being first, and subscribing to the ideology that no interest -- personal, political, or otherwise -- is higher than national interest". Delhi Police nabs two 'Baba' gang members in armed robbery case; mastermind absconding

New Delhi, Feb 17 (PTI) Delhi Police has claimed to have solved an armed robbery case at a currency exchange shop in southwest Delhi with the arrest of two members of the "Baba" gang, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Gaurav (20) and Dipanshu (21), were apprehended with a pistol, three country-made firearms, 10 live rounds, and Rs 20,000 of the stolen cash, police said.

On February 14, at 11 am, three armed robbers stormed into the currency exchange shop in Mahipalpur, firing shots before fleeing with Rs 1.5 lakh in cash and foreign currency worth Rs 6 lakh, they said.

A PCR call alerted the police, and a case was registered following which investigation was launched.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Surendra Choudhary said CCTV footage analysis led investigators to a car rented by Bhola Shankar, who is suspected to be the gang leader.

Police teams tracked mobile numbers leading them to multiple locations, including Gurgaon, Rohtak, Sonipat and Haridwar, in search of the suspects, he said.

The accused Gaurav and Dipanshu were arrested on a stolen motorcycle despite their attempt to flee, Choudhary said.

Interrogation revealed that the two were part of the "Baba" gang, led by Bhola Shankar. The gang was planning a series of armed robberies to fund their activities, he said.

The officer said that Dipanshu, a former kabaddi player, had multiple criminal cases in Haryana, while Gaurav, a defense aspirant, was lured into the gang with promises of quick money.

The mastermind, Bhola Shankar, remains absconding. He has a history of violent crimes and is suspected to be involved in multiple robberies, he added.

Efforts are underway to trace and arrest him, the DCP said. BM OZ

New Delhi, Feb 17 (PTI) The CBI will return its "temporary accommodation" in Agartala to the Tripura government where a theft had allegedly taken place recently with thieves scooting away doors, windows, furniture and other materials from there, officials said on Monday.

PM should fulfil his promise about restoration of statehood to J-K: CPI-M leader Karat

Jammu, Feb 17 (PTI) Asking Prime Minister Narendra Modi to fulfil his promise of restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, CPI(M) polit bureau coordinator Prakash Karat on Monday lashed out at the BJP-led Centre for its alleged attacks on the democratic and federal structure of the country.

Karat made the remarks while addressing the 13th 2-day state conference of party’s Jammu and Kashmir unit here.

“Your fight for restoration of statehood is not just your fight but the fight of the whole nation. It is also the fight to safeguard democracy, Constitution, federal structure and counter the anti-people policies of the Modi-led government,” he said.

He said a major injustice was done with the people of J&K when the erstwhile state was bifurcated to two Union territories and its special status was revoked on August 5, 2019.

“The main issue is when the statehood to J&K is restored. The promise made by the prime minister should be fulfilled immediately,” the CPI(M) leader said, adding “the happening of 2019 in J&K was the biggest assault on the Constitution, democracy and federal structure of the country”.

He said his party considers that downgrading J&K was not only taking away the rights of the people of J&K but an attack against the democratic setup of the country.

“We were aware that it will not be restricted to J&K. If democracy is finished in J&K, the same thing will happen in the rest of the country. The same thing is happening in rest of the country over the last five years,” he said.

He claimed that his home state Kerala is witnessing a tussle between the governor and the CPI(M)-led elected government and same thing is also happening in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and other state where non-BJP parties are in power.

He alleged that the central government is drying up funds for elected governments in non-BJP-ruled states which have no power to decide on the development projects.

“This all is happening at the behest of the Centre and all this is happening through the office of governor. In Kerala, the government cannot even decide the appointment of the vice chancellor of a university,” Karat said.

Referring to J&K, he said the assembly elections were held after 10 years but the chief minister and his cabinet colleagues have no powers which were handed over to the lieutenant governor through certain amendments prior to the last year polls.

He said the people should be given their basic rights and decide about their future themselves.

“We have been hearing that the statehood will be restored at an appropriate time. When this appropriate time will come,” he said, pushing for restoring full statehood to J&K.

He alleged that the BJP does not want democracy and federalism in the country as it is backed by the RSS which wants “Hindu Rashtra” as is evident from Jana Sangh’s opposition to the framing and adoption of the Constitution over 75 years ago.

“Over the past 10 years, we are seeing continuous attacks on secularism and democracy and implementation of black laws, detention of people under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, arrest of opposition leaders – first time chief ministers of Delhi and Jharkhand were jailed just before Lok Sabha elections,” he said.

The CPI(M) leader alleged that the majority of the media are also under control of the BJP and those who are trying to remain neutral are suppressed and jailed.

The unemployment is on rise, farmers are facing the worst of the situation and labourers are also suffering.

“Four labour codes are going to be implemented on March 31. We have to stand up and fight against these codes which are anti-labour. We stand with the people and protest the anti-people policies of the government and its attack on democracy, secularism, and federalism,” he said, adding a nationwide general strike will be called against the labour codes.

He said the two-day state conference, which is part of the national level conference scheduled in Tamil Nadu in the first week of April, will formulate a programme to safeguard the rights of the people. PTI TAS TAS KVK

36,420 women, 8,403 children went missing in Odisha in 5 years: Majhi

Bhubaneswar, Feb 17 (PTI) A total of 36,420 women and 8,403 children went missing in Odisha over the past five years, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi informed the assembly on Monday.

Majhi said 421 women were trafficked to other states through middlemen, leading to the arrest of 453 people.

The police have been immediately registering cases on the basis of complaints and it has taken action to trace the trafficked women, he said in a written reply to the House.

During 2020-2024, a total of 1,417 women and 1,857 children who had gone missing were traced, the CM said. Besides, the state government has also rescued 784 child labourers.

Elaborating on the steps taken to prevent women and child trafficking in Odisha, Majhi said 36 Integrated Anti Human Trafficking Units (IAHTUs) have been created.

IAHTUs have been made contact points to deal with such cases in Bolangir, Nuapada, Bargarh, Kalahandi, Sambalpur and Jharsuguda, he said.

Awareness campaigns to prevent trafficking cases are being organised at the police-station level. Police patrolling has also been strengthened in vulnerable areas like bus stands and railway stations, Majhi said.

Special training is also being provided to police personnel to identify, conduct investigation and avoid the recurrence of such incidents.

In another written reply, the chief minister informed that 6,437 cases of kidnapping/abduction of women were registered in different police stations of Odisha during 2024, and 413 people have been arrested in connection with these cases. PTI BBM RBT

World Bank executive directors arrive in Pakistan after two decades

Islamabad, Feb 17 (PTI) Pakistan on Monday received a delegation of nine World Bank Executive Directors, the first such visit in two decades, as the country prepares for long-term cooperation with the bank.

The delegation met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif who appreciated the more than seven-decade-old partnership with the World Bank.

He said that with the bank’s cooperation, several major projects had been undertaken in Pakistan for national development and development, according to an official communication.

The Prime Minister acknowledged that the bank provided full support to the affected people during the 2022 floods.

More than 33 million people were affected by the catastrophic flooding, which devastated Pakistan which was already trying to revive a struggling economy.

Over 937 people, including 343 children, were killed.

Shehbaz said that under the recent Country Partnership Framework of the World Bank, an investment of USD 40 billion will be made in Pakistan. The support will “open a new chapter of development in Pakistan,” he said.

The delegation appreciated the implementation of Pakistan’s ongoing reform programme, which it said was yielding positive results. The delegation appreciated the government’s reform initiatives in energy, industry and exports, privatization, revenue and other sectors.

The delegation will meet top officials to discuss the effective implementation of USD 40 billion in funding. It will visit all four provinces to review developmental initiatives and formulate strategies.

Meanwhile, sources said that Pakistan was preparing to get another loan from the International Monetary Fund and a delegation is expected to visit Pakistan on February 24 to negotiate the USD 1.5 billion concessional loan, aiming to address the damages caused by climate change.

Another IMF delegation is also expected to land in Pakistan next month to conduct a review of the already approved USD 7 billion loan before issuing the next tranche.

The total discussions will cover a combined loan of about USD 2.5 billion. PTI SH AMS

1984 Bhopal gas tragedy: Disposal of waste at Pithampur comes under SC scanner

New Delhi, Feb 17 (PTI) The disposal of hazardous waste of 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, which claimed 5,479 lives, near Indore came under the Supreme Court's scanner on Monday which sought responses from the Centre, Madhya Pradesh and its pollution control board.

The hazardous waste of around 377 tonnes of the now defunct Union Carbide factory was shifted to Pithampur industrial area in Dhar district, 250 km away from Bhopal and around 30 km from Indore.

The top court took note of a plea raising the seminal issue of right to health and the risk to the inhabitants of nearby areas, including the city of Indore.

Highly toxic gas methyl isocyanate (MIC) leaked from the Union Carbide factory during the intervening night of December 2-3, 1984, eventually killing 5,479 people and maiming more than five lakh others. It is considered to be among the worst industrial disasters in the world.

A bench of Justices B R Gavai and Augustine George Masih agreed to hear a plea challenging the December 3, 2024 and January 6 this year orders of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

The high court in its December last year order rebuked the authorities for not clearing the Union Carbide site in Bhopal despite directions from even the Supreme Court and set a four-week deadline to shift the waste, observing that even 40 years after the gas tragedy, authorities were in a "state of inertia".

It had warned the government of contempt proceedings if its directive was not followed.

On the night of January 1, the shifting of toxic waste began in 12 sealed container trucks for its disposal, an official had said.

Initially, some of the waste will be burnt at the waste disposal unit in Pithampur and the residue (ash) will be examined to find whether any harmful elements were left, Bhopal Gas Tragedy Relief and Rehabilitation Department Director Swatantra Kumar Singh had said.

The smoke from the incinerator would pass through special four-layer filters so that the surrounding air was not polluted, he added.

The plea, filed in the apex court through advocate Sarvam Ritam Khare, said the petitioner was concerned about the decision of the authorities in disposing off 337 tonnes of hazardous chemical waste at Pithampur.

Senior advocate Devadatt Kamat appeared for petitioner Chinmay Mishra.

The top court issued notice to the Centre, the Madhya Pradesh government and the state pollution control board seeking their responses on the plea and posted the matter for hearing after a week.

The plea said at least four-five villages were situated within the one km radius from the disposal site.

"The life and health of the residents of these villages are at extreme risk," the plea alleged, adding, "It is pertinent to mention that the Gambhir river flows besides the facility and caters waters to 'Yashwant Sagar Dam'".

It said this dam supplies drinking water of 40 per cent of Indore's population.

"In this situation and because of the sheer callousness, unpreparedness and opaqueness of the respondents, the life and limb of the thousands of people is at risk," the plea claimed.

It said several questions of law arises in the matter for the apex court's consideration.

"Whether the fundamental right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution, encompassing the right to a clean and healthy environment, is violated by permitting the disposal of hazardous chemical waste in densely populated areas without adequate safety measures?" read one of the questions of law raised in the plea.

It alleged the authorities have not informed the affected residents of Indore and Dhar districts about the risks or issued health advisories, violating their right to be heard and right to health. PTI ABA SJK AS

CBI to return accommodation in Tripura burgled recently

New Delhi, Feb 17 (PTI) The CBI will return its "temporary accommodation" in Agartala to the Tripura government where a theft had allegedly taken place recently with thieves scooting away doors, windows, furniture and other materials from there, officials said on Monday.

The agency said that the premises was not a "CBI office" but a state government quarters given to the agency as a temporary accommodation for the visiting staff in 2023 immediately after the Chit Funds Scam cases were transferred to it.

"No official documents or case property or case records of the CBI are kept in the said premises. No records or case property were stolen. The office of the CBI Unit at Agartala is functioning from a different premises and not from the aforesaid quarters," a CBI spokesperson said in a statement.

The said quarters have not been used even for residential purpose in the recent past, it said.

"Some of the furniture items given by the state government have been stolen from this quarters as nobody was staying there. An FIR has been registered and state police has arrested the suspects and also recovered some of the furniture items. Since the said premises is not being used any longer, the same is being returned to the state government," the statement said.

PTI BBM RBT

Not a flighty idea at all: Late for exam, student paraglides to college; video goes viral

Pune, Feb 17 (PTI) A 20-year-old student's ingenuity to reach his college in time for an exam by paragliding over a 'ghat' in Maharashtra's Satara district came to the fore after a video of his feat went viral on social media on Monday.

First Year B.Com student Samarth Mahangde said the incident took place on December 15 and was necessitated after he realised late that he had his first-semester exam on Natural Disaster Management in a few minutes time.

It helped that he knew paragliding operators in the area, said Mahangde, a resident of Pasarani village.

A video showed Mahangde taking a pilot-operated paragliding ride from Harrison's Folly, a flat plateau located about 5 kilometres before Panchgani on Wai-Panchgani road in Satara, to KisanVeer College.

"I work at a sugarcane juice centre near Harrison's Folly. That day, at 2pm I realised I had a paper at 2:15pm. I forgot about it since the exam timings and date had been rescheduled a few times earlier. I knew road was not an option due to Sunday traffic and ongoing work in the ghat section and my college is 12 kilometres away," he said.

"I knew paragliding operators in the area. One of them, Govind Yevale, asked a pilot to fly me to the college," the collegian said.

"After wearing all the mandatory safety equipment, he and our pilot managed to land at an open ground near the college in exactly five minutes," Yevale told PTI.

Mahangde said he could answer his exam in time also because his friends had got his hall ticket, identity card and uniform.

Kisan Veer College authorities confirmed about the exam and that Mahangde did appear for it.

"But, we cannot confirm if he paraglided here," a college official said. PTI SPK BNM

SC reinstates Solan mayor, terms her disqualification 'political goondaism'

New Delhi, Feb 17 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Monday reinstated Solan Mayor Usha Sharma in her post for the remainder of her tenure while terming her disqualification a case of "political goondaism".

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh made its August 20, 2024 order absolute by which it had stayed her disqualification while terming her removal "a case of male bias".

"The interim order of August 20, 2024 is made absolute. Any interference with the order will invite consequences," the bench said, as it adjourned the matter after a year. When senior advocate Devadatt Kamat, appearing for the respondents, tried to interject, the bench said it does not want to pass any strictures in the order at present, as it is a case of "political goondaism".

Sharma's counsel submitted that her tenure will get completed next year and urged the court to make its interim order of last year absolute.

On August 20, last year, the top court while issuing notice on the plea of Sharma and former mayor Poonam Grover against the June, 2024 order of the high court upholding their disqualification kept in in abeyance the fresh election for the post of the mayor of Solan in Himachal Pradesh, till further orders.

"Meanwhile, the operation of the order dated June 10, 2024 disqualifying the petitioners as councilors of ward no.12 and ward no.8 of the Municipal Corporation, Solan, Himachal Pradesh as well as operation of the impugned judgment of the high court dated June 25, 2024 shall remain stayed. Resultantly, the first petitioner shall be allowed to continue and perform her duties as mayor of municipal corporation, Solan, Himachal Pradesh till further orders," it had said.

The top court was also critical of the reasoning given by the high court while upholding the notification of June 10, 2024 disqualifying Sharma and Grover, who were councillors of ward nos. 12 and 8 of the civic body, respectively.

Both Sharma and Grover were disqualified by the government under the provisions of the Himachal Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act, 1994 for defying party directions during the election of mayor and deputy mayor held on December 7, 2023.

Elections to the Solan Municipal Corporation established in 2020 are held on party lines.

The civic body has 17 wards and the first election for these wards was held in April 2021. After the election, the mayor and deputy mayor were elected for a period of two and half years as per the provisions of the Act.

After the tenure of the mayor and deputy mayor came to an end on October 15, 2023, the polls for electing the next mayor and deputy mayor were held on December 7, 2023.

Sharma of the Congress party won the post of the mayor, while Meera Anand of the BJP got elected as the deputy mayor.

However, amid internal bickering among the Congress councillors, a complaint was made by the district Congress president and a councillor contending that Sharma, Grover and some others went against the party's directions during the mayoral polls and cast their votes against party candidate Sardar Singh Thakur.

They sought the disqualification of Sharma, Grover and some other councillors on grounds of defection under Section 8C of the Himachal Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act.

The high court in its verdict said the enquiry officer, after considering the material on record, held that despite the directions of the Congress party for supporting its mayoral candidate Sardar Singh Thakur and deputy mayor nominee Sangeeta Thakur, Sharma had filed her nomination for mayorship and Grover acted as her proposer.

It noted that the enquiry officer said both Sharma and Grover as well as councillors Rajeev Kaura and Abhay Sharma had cast their votes in favour of Usha Sharma instead of Sardar Singh Thakur, the official candidate of the Congress.

"In our opinion, the enquiry officer's report contains findings based on appreciation of evidence, which cannot be said to be based on no evidence or was perverse, warranting interference by this court in exercise of its jurisdiction of judicial review under Article 226 of the Constitution of India," the high court had said in its order of June 25, 2024.

The high court, while dismissing the pleas of Sharma and Grover said it is not open to this court to act as an appellate authority and substitute its views by re-appreciating evidence already considered by the enquiry officer.

"Therefore, we see no reason to interfere with the impugned order passed by the 1st respondent (secretary, Urban Development department) accepting the findings in the enquiry report and disqualifying the petitioners as councillors of the Municipal Corporation, Solan," the high court had said. Dissanayake govt unveils first budget, projects 5 pc economic growth for Sri Lanka in 2025

Colombo, Feb 17 (PTI) The Sri Lankan economy is expected to grow at 5 per cent in 2025, President Anura Dissanayake said Monday while presenting the budget for this year.

This is the first full-year budget presented by the National People's Power (NPP) government, which came to power in November last year.

Introducing the budget, Dissanayake said a budget is a "reflection of the government’s approach to building the economy and overall policy."

He added that this year's budget intends to set a foundation of an economy where "all citizens are active participants, active stakeholders, and active beneficiaries," news portal Adaderana.lk reported.

“We expect the 2025 economic growth to be around 5 per cent,” said Dissanayake, also the island nation's Finance Minister.

He asserted that all fiscal measures would be directed towards the commencement of repaying the external debt from 2028.

"...Growth in non-debt creating inflows along with robust economic growth and a primary budget surplus of 2.3 per cent of GDP will ensure Sri Lanka is well placed to meet the gradual increase in debt service payments from 2028 onwards," the report quoted the president as saying.

Last year, under then-president Ranil Wickremesinghe, Sri Lanka received capital grace periods on bilateral loan payments until 2028.

Dissanayake also said a budget deficit of 6.7 per cent of the GDP or SLR 2.2 trillion was expected in 2025, down from the previous year’s 6.8 per cent.

In line with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme targets, tax revenue is expected to be increased to 15 per cent of the GDP in 2025, he said.

Dissanayake said the government would prioritise digitising government services and would move towards a cashless economy.

Despite his pre-election statements to review the IMF programme of his predecessor Wickremesinghe, he has continued to steer the economy within the global lender’s reforms.

Since the IMF and Sri Lanka entered a USD 2.9 billion bailout in March 2022, three tranches of over USD 330 million have been disbursed.

The fourth tranche of the four-year facility is expected to be materialised soon after the IMF executive board's approval.

The president also announced a phased wage hike for state sector employees while presenting the budget.

“We propose to increase the minimum monthly basic salary from SLR 24,250 to 40,000 by 15,750. The current ad-hoc interim allowance and special allowance will be integrated into the basic salary giving a net increase of SLR 8,250 in the minimum salary," he said.

“Of the total net salary increase, SLR 5,000 and 30 per cent of the balance amount will be paid starting from April 2025, with the remaining 70 per cent being paid in equal portions beginning in January 2026 and January 2027,” he said. PTI CORR GRS

PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif blames jailed former PM Imran Khan for Pakistan's economic woes

Lahore, Feb 17 (PTI) Pakistan's three-time prime minister Nawaz Sharif set his gun against former premier Imran Khan on Monday, saying the jailed politician is responsible for economic woes and other ills prevailing in the country.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz, whose younger brother Shehbaz Sharif and daughter Maryam Nawaz are running governments in the Centre and Punjab province under the umbrella of the powerful military, is currently keeping a low profile.

He recently met PML-N legislators from Punjab to listen to issues in their constituencies and blamed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party supremo Imran Khan, who has been in jail in multiple cases since August 2023, for Pakistan's economic woes.

"The economy and national values were destroyed and democracy was stabbed in the back by a person (Imran Khan)," Nawaz told PML-N lawmakers.

He said Khan had shaken the country's foundation after coming to power in 2018.

The PML-N supremo also held Khan, 72, responsible for bringing in "indecency and hostility in politics and destroying the national values.

"Corruption, economic downfall, and inflation are the so-called 'gifts' of the PTI government," he said.

Recalling his last tenure (2013-17), Nawaz said Pakistan was progressing but it was derailed. He, however, did not blame the military establishment for ousting him from power in 2017.

Nawaz said Pakistan narrowly escaped default and credited his brother Shehbaz for economic stability in the debt-ridden country.

"Our vision is to put Pakistan on the path of progress and free the people from inflation," Nawaz said. PTI MZ PY PY

Green growth on agenda of International Maritime Organisation chief's India visit

London, Feb 17 (PTI) The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) will begin a three-day visit to India when he arrives in Mumbai on Wednesday for talks with senior government officials on topics including unlocking green growth and jobs to make shipping more sustainable for all.

Arsenio Dominguez is embarking on his first India tour since taking charge at the London-headquartered IMO last year and has talks scheduled with industry representatives and the seafaring community to discuss further actions to support seafarers, protect the marine environment and decarbonise shipping.

Ahead of the visit, he highlighted India’s “significant global role” in supplying a large share of the 2 million seafarers who enable international trade, as well as championing innovations in ship recycling and sustainable ports.

“India is a major maritime nation with a rich seafaring heritage,” Dominguez said in a statement on Monday.

“I look forward to engaging with India’s maritime leaders and community on how we can work together to upskill and strengthen the global maritime workforce, unlock green growth and jobs, and make shipping more sustainable for all,” he said.

In Mumbai, the Secretary-General will attend the 2025 Green Shipping Conclave at the Maritime Training Institute in Powai.

The event brings together industry leaders, policymakers and technologists to discuss advancements in alternative fuels, green ship technologies, sustainable port operations, and financial mechanisms. On Thursday, he will join Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal for a joint press conference at the conclave.

Dominguez is also expected to address seafarers at local maritime institutions, visit the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), and participate in policy dialogues with a wide range of stakeholders.

IMO is the United Nations specialised agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. It has 176 member states, with India re-elected to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council for the 2024-25 biennium.

The Council is the executive organ of the IMO and is responsible, under the Assembly, for supervising the work of the organisation. India's re-election in December 2023 falls under the Category of 10 states with "the largest interest in international seaborne trade", alongside Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

According to the IMO, more than 80 per cent of global trade is delivered by sea. This means food, fuel, medicine, and most everyday goods are all delivered by the roughly 2 million seafarers that work on ships. The IMO is charged with providing a robust regulatory framework to support this global shipping system, including through more than 50 international conventions, protocols and numerous guidelines and standards. Singapore's Indian-origin leader fined SGD 14,000 for lying to parliamentary committee

Singapore, Feb 17 (PTI) Singapore's Indian-origin Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh was on Monday fined SGD 14,000 after a district court found him guilty on two counts of lying under oath to a parliamentary committee.

Singh was fined a maximum of SGD 7,000 for each of his two charges.

Speaking to reporters after the hearing, the Leader of the Opposition said he will be running for the general election which is due in November this year.

The Constitution states that a sitting MP will lose his seat and be disqualified from standing for election if he is jailed for at least one year, or fined at least SGD 10,000.

However, the Elections Department confirmed on Monday that the sentence imposed on Singh does not reach the threshold to disqualify him as an MP. It said disqualification is based on the sentence imposed for a single offence.

In a Facebook post, Singh said that he has instructed his legal team to file a notice of appeal and to look into the written judgment in closer detail.

Fielding questions from the media at the State Courts after the sentencing, Singh said that he intends to contest the upcoming General Election which is due November this year.

Deputy Principal District Judge Luke Tan convicted Singh on two charges of lying in the house relating to another lying case of a fellow former party member and MP Raeesah Khan in 2021.

Singh, 48, was found to have given false testimony to a parliamentary committee that was looking into the conduct of former Workers’ Party MP Raeesah Khan, who had admitted to making up a story about accompanying a sexual assault victim to the police station.

Singh is secretary-general of the opposition Workers’ Party and was convicted on Monday.

"The court must send a message on the importance of giving truthful information when under oath," the judge said in sentencing.

Judge Luke Tan agreed with both the prosecution and the defence that a jail term was not warranted in Singh's case.

Singh was accused of willfully giving two false answers to the COP during its inquiry into Khan's case on December 10 and December 15, 2021.

He was charged with falsely testifying in two cases.

On one occasion, he had said that after an August 8, 2021 meeting between him, Khan and WP leaders Sylvia Lim and Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap, he wanted Khan to clarify that she had lied in Parliament on August 3.

On two other occasions, he had said that during a meeting with Khan on October 3, 2021, he had asked her to come clean about her lie if the issue was brought up in the House on October 4, 2021.

On Singh's first charge, Judge Tan said evidence showed that at the end of the meeting on August 8, 2021, the position was that Khan's lie would not come up and that it would be difficult for the government to find out the truth due to the large number of police stations.

At the same time, Singh, who is a "political veteran", was aware that the lie could result in Khan being brought to the COP, he added, noting the former's position as the party's secretary general and Leader of the Opposition.

The prosecution sought a maximum fine of SGD 7,000 on each charge.

Singh’s trial began four months ago.

Singh was facing up to three years in jail, a fine of up to SGD 7,000 (USD 5,290), or both for each charge, that would eventually disqualify him from Parliament seat and contest election to political office. PTI GS NSA AMS

41 former police officers arrested in Bangladesh for committing atrocities during student-led protests last year

Dhaka, Feb 17 (PTI) Police in Bangladesh have arrested 41 former officers who are among 1,059 ex-policemen accused of committing atrocities during the 2024 student-led movement that led to the ouster of prime minister Sheikh Hasina, officials and media reports said on Monday.

Hasina, the Awami League leader, resigned and escaped to India on August 5 last year after anti-discrimination students protests against the quota system turned into a movement and ousted her 16-year regime from power. Some 1,400 people lost their lives during the protests between July and August.

The mass circulation Prothom Alo newspaper, quoting unnamed police headquarters (PHQ) officials, said surviving victims of the atrocities or the family members of the slain victims lodged hundreds of cases with police stations and court accusing the 1,059 officials of the main law enforcement agency.

Police have arrested 41 former officers so far.

The PHQ said police’s two former inspectors general (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun and AKN Shahidul Haque and former police commissioners of Dhaka and the southeastern port city of Chattogram -- Mohammad Asaduzzaan and Mian Saiful Islam -- were among those who were arrested so far.

Other than Haq, these officers were serving until Hasina's departed from the country.

The highest number of 174 cases were filed against Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s now fugitive former additional commissioner Harunur Rashid.

Arrested former IGP Al Mamun faces 159 cases.

The officials said several senior officers including additional police chiefs and a police commissioner were on the run while some of them were believed to have fled the country.

Bangladesh is currently governed by an interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, whom the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement appointed as Chief Advisor.

Incumbent Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam earlier said the cases filed over the July-August uprising would be investigated under committees led by senior police officers in each of eight police ranges across Bangladesh.

The UN rights office which last week released a fact-finding report on the 2024 violence in Bangladesh reviewed the police and other security forces' role, saying they used force causing “systematic and widespread extrajudicial killings as part of a coordinated strategy of repression”.

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said the vast majority of the people killed in violence during the uprising were shot by Bangladesh’s security forces.

“Based on the material before it, OHCHR has reasonable grounds to believe that police and paramilitary state security forces resorted to use of force violations against protesters, including systematic and widespread extrajudicial killings as part of a coordinated strategy of repression,” it read.

It said the security forces tried to disperse disruptive “yet peaceful assemblies with ‘disproportionate force’, in particular by shooting military rifles and shotguns loaded with lethal metal pellets” while in some cases “deliberately killed or maimed defenceless protesters by shooting them at point-blank range”. Generative AI is already being used in journalism – here’s how people feel about it

Washington, Feb 17 (The Conversation) Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has taken off at lightning speed in the past couple of years, creating disruption in many industries. Newsrooms are no exception.

A new report published today finds that news audiences and journalists alike are concerned about how news organisations are – and could be – using generative AI such as chatbots, image, audio and video generators, and similar tools.

The report draws on three years of interviews and focus group research into generative AI and journalism in Australia and six other countries (United States, United Kingdom, Norway, Switzerland, Germany and France).

Only 25% of our news audience participants were confident they had encountered generative AI in journalism. About 50% were unsure or suspected they had.

This suggests a potential lack of transparency from news organisations when they use generative AI. It could also reflect a lack of trust between news outlets and audiences.

Who or what makes your news – and how – matters for a host of reasons.

Some outlets tend to use more or fewer sources, for example. Or use certain kinds of sources – such as politicians or experts – more than others.

Some outlets under-represent or misrepresent parts of the community. This is sometimes because the news outlet’s staff themselves aren’t representative of their audience.

Carelessly using AI to produce or edit journalism can reproduce some of these inequalities.

Our report identifies dozens of ways journalists and news organisations can use generative AI. It also summarises how comfortable news audiences are with each.

The news audiences we spoke to overall felt most comfortable with journalists using AI for behind-the-scenes tasks rather than for editing and creating. These include using AI to transcribe an interview or to provide ideas on how to cover a topic.

But comfort is highly dependent on context. Audiences were quite comfortable with some editing and creating tasks when the perceived risks were lower.

The problem – and opportunity

Generative AI can be used in just about every part of journalism.

For example, a photographer could cover an event. Then, a generative AI tool could select what it “thinks” are the best images, edit the images to optimise them, and add keywords to each.

These might seem like relatively harmless applications. But what if the AI identifies something or someone incorrectly, and these keywords lead to mis-identifications in the photo captions? What if the criteria humans think make “good” images are different to what a computer might think? These criteria may also change over time or in different contexts.

Even something as simple as lightening or darkening an image can cause a furore when politics are involved.

AI can also make things up completely. Images can appear photorealistic but show things that never happened. Videos can be entirely generated with AI, or edited with AI to change their context.

Generative AI is also frequently used for writing headlines or summarising articles. These sound like helpful applications for time-poor individuals, but some news outlets are using AI to rip off others’ content.

AI-generated news alerts have also gotten the facts wrong. As an example, Apple recently suspended its automatically generated news notification feature. It did this after the feature falsely claimed US murder suspect Luigi Mangione had killed himself, with the source attributed as the BBC.

What do people think about journalists using AI?

Our research found news audiences seem to be more comfortable with journalists using AI for certain tasks when they themselves have used it for similar purposes.

For example, the people interviewed were largely comfortable with journalists using AI to blur parts of an image. Our participants said they used similar tools on video conferencing apps or when using the “portrait” mode on smartphones.

Likewise, when you insert an image into popular word processing or presentation software, it might automatically create a written description of the image for people with vision impairments. Those who’d previously encountered such AI descriptions of images felt more comfortable with journalists using AI to add keywords to media.

The most frequent way our participants encountered generative AI in journalism was when journalists reported on AI content that had gone viral.

For example, when an AI-generated image purported to show Princes William and Harry embracing at King Charles’s coronation, news outlets reported on this false image.

Our news audience participants also saw notices that AI had been used to write, edit or translate news articles. They saw AI-generated images accompanying some of these. This is a popular approach at The Daily Telegraph, which uses AI-generated images to illustrate many of its opinion columns.

Overall, our participants felt most comfortable with journalists using AI for brainstorming or for enriching already created media. This was followed by using AI for editing and creating. But comfort depends heavily on the specific use.

Most of our participants were comfortable with turning to AI to create icons for an infographic. But they were quite uncomfortable with the idea of an AI avatar presenting the news, for example.

On the editing front, a majority of our participants were comfortable with using AI to animate historical images, like this one. AI can be used to “enliven” an otherwise static image in the hopes of attracting viewer interest and engagement.

Your role as an audience member

If you’re unsure if or how journalists are using AI, look for a policy or explainer from the news outlet on the topic. If you can’t find one, consider asking the outlet to develop and publish a policy.

Consider supporting media outlets that use AI to complement and support – rather than replace – human labour.

Before making decisions, consider the past trustworthiness of the journalist or outlet in question, and what the evidence says. (The Conversation) AMS

Car brake dust can be more harmful than diesel exhaust – new study

London, Feb 17 (The Conversation) Exposure to air pollution is associated with around seven million premature deaths per year across the world. When we think of urban air pollution, diesel exhaust emissions are often portrayed as a key culprit – rightly so, given previous research findings. However, our latest research shows that dust from brake pads could be more harmful to our lungs.

Dust produced by wear of the road, tyres, and brakes, known as “non-exhaust emissions”, are now the major type of emissions from road transport, surpassing exhaust emissions across many European countries.

Of these, brake dust is often the main contributor, but it’s not yet subject to regulation. There is much less known about the potential health effects of brake dust compared to diesel exhaust dust.

We grew cells in the lab to mimic the lining of the lung, and exposed these cells to both brake dust and diesel exhaust dust. Brake dust proved significantly more harmful to these cells across different measures that are linked to lung diseases such as cancer and asthma.

Interestingly, we found that removing copper from the brake dust reduced these effects.

Despite this, current vehicle regulations in the UK only target exhaust emissions. Our findings suggest there is an urgent need to consider regulation of non-exhaust emissions as well.

Reformulating brake pads might be one way to reduce the potential health burden imposed by these emissions.

Brake pads previously contained asbestos fibres to deal with overheating. However, asbestos was banned in the UK in 1999 because of links to lung disease.

This resulted in the motor industry designing new brake pad linings, including non-asbestos organic (NAO) pads commonly used in vehicles today.

We compared the harmfulness of dust from the wear of different pad types. Ironically, we found that dust from the NAO pads, designed to replace asbestos-containing pads, was the most toxic to lung cells compared not only to dust from other pad types, but also to diesel exhaust dust.

Some of the effects on our exposed cells relate to diseases such as lung cancer, lung fibrosis (lung scarring), asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Previous research has shown that metals in air pollution particles can have toxic effects. We measured the metal content in the different types of brake dust and diesel exhaust dust.

AI techniques identified high copper content as the defining characteristic of brake dust from NAO pads.

We also found that this copper could get inside exposed lung cells. Most interestingly, when we treated this brake dust with a chemical to neutralise copper, its toxic effects were diminished.

This suggests that copper is causing at least some of the harmful properties of this dust.

Almost half of all copper in the air we breathe comes from brake and tyre wear. Various studies conducted by other research groups have found that exposure to high concentrations of copper is associated with impaired lung function, and overall risk of death.

EVs aren’t perfect

There is a huge body of evidence showing that airborne dusts are damaging to our health.

Unfortunately, while the switch to electric vehicles (EVs) will eliminate exhaust emissions, which include toxic gases as well as dust, it will not eliminate road, tyre and brake dust.

Studies indicate that, because they tend to be heavier, electric vehicles can generate more non-exhaust dust than petrol or diesel vehicles – the zero-emission label is clearly not accurate.

Some EVs are fitted with regenerative braking systems that allow the engine to act as a generator, slowing the car. However, EVs are still fitted with friction braking systems, which help bring the car to a full stop, so they still generate brake dust.

The upcoming Euro 7 emissions standards that will be introduced in November 2026 will place limits on brake dust emissions which may spur innovation to develop new brake materials or dust-trapping mechanisms. They may also place extra focus on traffic calming and road design, to minimise stop-start and aggressive driving styles – both of which increase brake dust emissions.

New brake pad formulations might reduce the total level of dust emissions or might be designed to exclude toxic components similarly to how asbestos was eliminated previously.

Notably, in the US, both California and Washington have passed legislation to reduce copper content within brake pads, although this was primarily in response to concerns about the runoff of copper from brake dust into waterways, affecting aquatic life.

Non-exhaust emissions are all around us, making up around 60% of all vehicle-derived pollution particles in the UK. It is important for us to recognise that there is no air pollutant for which there is an established safe exposure level.

As we make the shift to electric cars, science and regulation must approach these emissions as seriously as those from the exhaust pipe. (The Conversation) AMS

‘Mum, what’s the meaning of life?’ How to talk about philosophy with little kids

Sydney, Feb 17 (The Conversation) If your young child asks “what’s the meaning of life?” you might laugh it off (how cute!) or freeze in panic (where do I even begin?).

It’s tempting to dismiss these big questions as too advanced for kids. Plato and Aristotle both believed children weren’t ready for philosophy. In fact, they didn’t think people were ready to study philosophy until they turned 30.

But children know otherwise. They ask big questions like “Why are we here?” and “What does it mean to be fair?” and “Why do we keep feeding the cat, even though she never says thank you?”

American researcher and author Jana Mohr Lone has taught philosophy to young children for more than 20 years. As one second-grade child told her:

[…] children don’t know as many things about the world and so our minds are more free to imagine.

This openness makes children natural philosophers. By encouraging these conversations, you can help them grow into curious, thoughtful and reflective individuals.

How can parents do this?

3 steps for philosophical dialogue

One of the difficulties of engaging in philosophy is people may be unfamiliar with how it works.

But you can have a philosophical discussion by following three steps:

reflection

generalisation

abstraction.

When your child asks a deep question like “What’s the meaning of life?” you don’t need to have the answer, you just need to start a conversation.

First, prompt your child to reflect on the question. You could ask: “What do you think?”

This allows your child to explore their own experiences. They might say, “I live for football and Bluey!”

Second, move to generalisation. You can ask, “Do you think that’s the meaning of life for everyone?” This opens up a philosophical discussion beyond the self. Your child might say, “Well, Stella lives for gymnastics and cheese.”

Finally, prompt towards abstraction, by asking “What makes life meaningful for all people?”

Football, Bluey and handstands won’t appeal to everyone, but something else might. Now we’re looking for examples (or counter-examples) as a method of inquiry.

This prompts your child to look for what is common to all people in living a meaningful life. They may respond with something like:

A lot of people love chocolate but not Aunty Grace. Most people love dogs but maybe not people who really love cats. Everyone loves time with their friends and family.

Suddenly, you’re having a rich philosophical dialogue. You can continue further inquiry into what really is love, or what makes certain relationships more important than others.

What we’re doing here is having a dialogue through concepts, academically known as conceptual analysis.

Why should you do this?

Educational research has found philosophical dialogue improves children’s logical reasoning, reading and maths comprehension, self-esteem and turn-taking.

Studies have found it benefits children’s academic and social development in early childhood, primary school and high school.

But beyond these skills, philosophy empowers children to engage meaningfully with the world around them.

Happiness, identity, fairness, death, reality, time, nature, good, knowledge and purpose are all things children encounter every day. Philosophy with your child can simply be the exploration of what these concepts mean and how they impact our lives.

Understanding concepts and being able to apply that understanding to life is the foundation of philosophy.

Questions to ask your child

To engage your child in philosophy, start a conversation with them about the concepts they’re encountering.

If they’re drawing, you could ask what is art? What is imagination?.

If they don’t want to share their favourite toy: what is fairness? What is kindness?

If they’re talking to the dog: what is language? What is understanding?

If they’re emotional: what is happiness? What is sadness?

If they want to know why they should go to school: what is knowledge?

If they’re telling you about their dream: what is real?

Next time your child asks a big question, embrace the moment. By exploring concepts like fairness, love and happiness, you’re helping them interpret the world and become more thoughtful people.

By asking them to reflect, explore different perspectives and consider the bigger picture, you’ll embark on a philosophical journey that can grow into something meaningful for you both. (The Conversation) AMS

Race for Akzo Nobel's India business heats up as Blackstone, other PE firms join race

New Delhi, Feb 17 (PTI) The race to acquire the India business of Dutch multinational paint company Akzo Nobel NV has intensified further with the entry of global investment firm Blackstone, according to industry sources.

Besides Blackstone, three other US-based private equity (PE) funds have shown interest in acquiring a controlling stake in the Akzo Nobel India business, in which rival paint makers such as JSW Paints and Pidilite Industries are already in the fray.

The PE funds, which include Blackstone, Warburg Pincus, global investment firm Carlyle Group, and Jersey-based CVC Capital Partners, are not only looking at the India business of Akzo Nobel, which operates in the decorative paint segment with brand 'Dulux' but also for its entire South Asia business.

Akzo Nobel's South Asia business includes India and neighbouring markets such as Pakistan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

Some of the big names such as Aditya Birla Group's Birla Opus and Berger Paints have opted out of the race to acquire Akzo Nobel's India paint business.

Moreover, Asian Paints, which dominates the Indian Paints industry with majority market share, is also reluctant as it may face regulatory hurdles from fair trade regulator CCI, the sources said.

JSW Paints, part of Sajjan Jindal-led diversified conglomerate JSW Group is in a race in association with PE firm TPG to acquire the majority stake from the parent Dutch firm.

Besides Pidilite -- a new player in the Indian paints industry -- Pune-based Indigo Paints are also believed to be in the race to acquire a 74.76 per cent stake held by Akzo Nobel in its India business through several entities.

An e-mail to Akzo Nobel India remained unanswered till the time of filing of the story.

In October last year, Akzo Nobel NV announced a strategic review of its portfolio in South Asia and said it was looking for strategic options, including partnerships, joint ventures, mergers or divestments. This is to deploy capital towards expanding its core coatings business.

Akzo paints and coatings maker Akzo Nobel India, in a regulatory filing on January 6, said it is exploring the sale of its powder coatings business and R&D operations to a separate indirect wholly owned arm, Akzo Nobel NV, following a request by the parent firm.

Besides, Akzo Nobel India has asked to explore the potential acquisition of decorative paints intellectual properties owned by ANNV, the company added.

"The Board of Directors of the company, at its meeting held on January 6, 2025, took note of the above said and authorised the company's management to commence exploratory steps as may be required to evaluate and examine the aforesaid potential transactions," the filing said.

Akzo Nobel India has a presence in a wide range of paints and coatings segments spanning from decorative paints, automotive and speciality coatings, industrial coatings, marine, protective and yacht coatings to powder coatings.

Its revenue from operations in FY24 was Rs 3,961.6 crore.

In its latest annual report, Akzo Nobel India, citing the data of the Indian Paints Association, said the paints and coatings industry in the country is estimated to be USD 8.5 billion in value and 6.3 million MTPA by volume.

The architectural sector accounts for nearly 70 per cent of the paint industry, and is the largest segment, while the industrial segment accounts for 30 per cent of the total consumption. PTI KRH KRH TRB

ICSI, ICMAI demand inclusion of co secretaries, cost accountants as 'accountant' in I-T Bill

New Delhi, Feb 17 (PTI) Apex bodies of company secretaries and cost accountants have urged the government to include these professionals under the definition of 'accountant' in the Income Tax Bill, 2025.

The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) and the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI), both set up under Acts of Parliament, have demanded that their members be treated as accountant in the bill. They come under the corporate affairs ministry.

ICSI has around 75,000 members while ICMAI has about 1 lakh members.

In a release on Monday, ICSI said that company secretaries should be included in the definition of 'accountant' as outlined in Section 515(3)(b) of the bill.

"The omission is seen as a missed opportunity in recognising company secretary's vital role in the financial and compliance landscape of the country," the release said.

According to the institute, it remains committed to advocating for the recognition of company secretaries as integral professionals in the taxation system and looks forward to a positive response from the government in this regard.

ICSI President Dhananjay Shukla said that to cater to this need for a large pool of qualified professionals who can ensure compliance with tax regulations, it is imperative that company secretaries be included in the definition of 'accountant' in the bill.

In a message on ICMAI website, its president Bibhuti Bhusan Nayak said the institute's council is fully seized of the issue.

"This is contrary to the assurance given to us that a level-playing field will be provided to all professionals.

'All We Imagine As Light' loses Best Film Not in English Language BAFTA to 'Emilia Perez'

New Delhi, Feb 17 (PTI) Payal Kapadia's critically acclaimed movie "All We Imagine As Light" lost out the BAFTA in the Best Film Not in the English Language category to French title "Emilia Perez".

British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri's "Santosh", British-Indian director Karan Kandhari's "Sister Midnight" and Indian-origin British actor Dev Patel's directorial debut "Monkey Man" missed out on a BAFTA in the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer segment.

The award in this category went to Irish filmmaker Rich Peppiatt for his film "Kneecap", which depicts the rise of Kneecap, an Irish hip-hop trio from Belfast, Northern Ireland. "Hoard" by Luna Carmoon was also one of the nominees in this segment.

The win for "Emilia Perez" comes as a surprise given the controversy surrounding its lead star Karla Sofia Gascon's old tweets, which were viewed as Islamophobic and racist. The film's second lead Zoe Saldana took home the BAFTA in the Supporting Actress segment.

Directed by Jacques Audiard, "Emilia Perez" follows four remarkable women in Mexico, each pursuing their own happiness. Cartel leader Emilia (Gascon) enlists Rita (Saldana), an unappreciated lawyer, to help fake her death so that she can finally live authentically as her true self.

Though the film's team and Netflix have distanced themselves from Gascon, Audiard thanked her in his speech though she was missing from the ceremony.

"I would like to thank all the wonderful artists who brought this film to life and who are here with us tonight. My dear Zoe, my dear Selena, Giorgini, Paul, Juliet, Camille, Clement, Julia and your team, but also you, my dear Karla Sofia, that I kiss. I’m deeply proud of what we achieved together. Long live 'Emilia Perez'," he said in his speech.

Though Kapadia's film "All We Imagine As Light", which revolves around two Malayali nurses in Mumbai and their friendships, missed out at the BAFTAs, it has already created history by becoming the first from India to win the Grand Prix at the Cannes in May last year.

Hours after the ceremony, the official Instagram page of Kapadia's film shared a picture of the director mingling with fellow artists.

"Win or lose, good year for Indian films internationally @allweimagineaslightfilm," read the caption of the Instagram Story.

Earlier this year, "Emilia Perez" also won the Golden Globe in the Best Motion Picture Non-English Language category, beating out "All We Imagine...", "The Girl With the Needle", "I'm Still Here", "The Seed of the Sacred Fig" and "Vermiglio".

Other films nominated for the Film Not in the English Language BAFTA were: "I'm Still Here" (Portuguese), "Kneecap" (Irish/English), and "The Seed of the Sacred Fig" (Persian).

At the ceremony, held at the Royal Albert Hall in London, papal thriller "Conclave" -- fronted by Ralph Fiennes -- emerged as the Best Film. It also earned the award for Best British Film as well.

Brady Corbet won the Director BAFTA for "The Brutalist", which also saw lead star Adrien Brody bag the Best Actor award.

Mikey Madison won Best Actress BAFTA for "Anora", with Kieran Culkin being adjudged Best Supporting Actor for "A Real Pain".

Scottish actor David Tennant, star of "Doctor Who" and "Good Omens", hosted the BAFTAs for the second time. PTI RDS BK

Jacques Audiard thanks 'Emilia Perez' lead Karla Sofia Gascon after BAFTA win despite controversy

Los Angeles, Feb 17 (PTI) Director Jacques Audiard thanked Karla Sofia Gascon, the embattled lead star of his film "Emilia Perez", as he accepted the golden BAFTA mask in the Best Film Not in the English Language category, amid the controversy over her old tweets.

"Emilia Perez", a Spanish language French musical crime film, also stars Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez.

The movie beat out Hindi-Malayalam film "All We Imagine as Light", "I’m Still Here" (Portuguese), "Kneecap" (Irish/English), and "The Seed of the Sacred Fig" (Persian) to win the honour despite Gascon's scandal.

During his speech, Audiard expressed his gratitude to the entire team, including Gascon who gave the ceremony held at London's Royal Albert Hall on Sunday a miss.

"Above all, I would like to thank all the wonderful artists who brought this film to life and who are here with us tonight.

"My dear Zoe, my dear Selena, Giorgini, Paul, Juliet, Camille, Clement, Julia and your team, but also you, my dear Karla Sofia, that I kiss. I’m deeply proud of what we achieved together. Long live 'Emilia Perez'," he added, as quoted by Variety.

Gascon has been under fire after her old tweets resurfaced which have been termed Islamophobic and racist. She even deleted her X handle after the backlash.

Audiard's vote of thanks to the actor comes weeks after the director responded to the comments of the Oscar-nominated star by calling them "hateful".

"Emilia Perez" follows a Mexican cartel leader (Gascon) who enlists a lawyer (Saldana) to help the cartel leader to disappear and transition into a woman. PTI ATR RDS

Sadleir was speaking on the second day of The Times Group ET NOW Global Business Summit here on Sunday.

"Hosting the Olympics would be an incredible achievement, and having the 2030 Commonwealth Games in India would be the right step towards that goal," she said.

Her comments come in the backdrop of informal discussions between the CGF and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on the possibility of hosting the 2030 CWG.

Jeev registers top-20 finish in Staysure Marbella on Legends Tour

Marbella (Spain), Feb 17 (PTI) Veteran India golfer Jeev Milkha Singh overcame a double bogey to finish in the top-20 at the Marbella Staysure event on the 2025 Legends Tour here.

Jeev shot a final round of 71 with four birdies, one bogey and a double bogey for a total of 3-under for 54 holes to finish T-19th on Sunday. His first two rounds were 68-73.

It was the opening event of the season on the Legends Tour and Jeev had finished T-28 in Trophy Hassan II on the Champions Tour PGA.

Simon Griffiths produced another hugely impressive performance to win the opening event of the 2025 Legends Tour season with a 15-under total, holding off Colin Montgomerie, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Stephen Gallacher and Scott Hend in the final round.

Griffiths started the day with a two-shot lead and picked up birdies at the first and eighth to maintain the advantage heading into the back nine.

While many of the chasers struggled to mount a serious charge on the way home, Griffiths pulled away with further red numbers at the 10th, 12th and 15th. A closing bogey didn't matter as the 51-year-old made a perfect start to the new season.

Scott Hend emerged as Griffith's nearest challenger, but the Aussie had to settle for the second place. He flew through the field with a best-of-the-week 64 that featured 10 birdies, including seven in an eight-hole stretch from the ninth.

Nevertheless, it's a good start to the year for Hend, who finished third on the Order of Merit in 2024.

Mikael Lundberg finished along in third spot with a 67. The Swede went out in 33 and picked up shots on the 10th and 17th in a bogey-free back nine.

Local hero Jimenez came into the week as favourite after winning the Trophy Hassan II on the PGA Tour Champions last week and he finished in a four-way tie for the fourth spot.

Jimenez was joined on -10 by debutant Matthew Cort, 2023 Legends Tour number one Peter Baker and Q School graduate Lionel Alexandre, who shot rounds of 68, 69 and 70, respectively.

Former Ryder Cup player Stephen Gallacher finished eighth in his first Legends Tour start on -9.

Montgomerie started the day in second place, but slipped to tied-9th with a 73. PTI Cor SSC SSC

Indian men look to continue winning momentum against Germany in FIH Pro League

Bhubaneswar, Feb 17 (PTI) Their campaign back on track after a jittery start, India will look to continue the winning momentum when they take on Paris Olympics silver medallist Germany in their next men's FIH Pro League match here on Tuesday.

India had a woeful start to their home leg matches of the Pro League, losing 1-3 to Spain in their opener.

But the hosts bounced back strongly to tame Spain 2-0 in the return match on Sunday.

With three points from two games, India are currently sitting in eighth place in the standings and will be desperate to climb up the table.

After a relatively off day on Saturday, the Indians looked a completely different side on Sunday, dominating for most part of the match and scoring two field goals through Mandeep Singh (32nd minute) and Dilpreet Singh (39th) to pocket all three points.

While the strikers shone bright in the second game, India's chief coach Craig Fulton would be a bit concerned about penalty corner conversions.

Despite winning seven penalty corners across their two games, India failed to convert a single chance.

In the absence of India captain Harmanpreet Singh, who was rested for the second match, Hockey India League star performer Jugraj Singh cut a sorry figure from set pieces.

The forwardline comprising Dilpreet , Mandeep and Sukhjeet Singh have each netted a goal for India so far in the tournament and will be looking to add to their tally against Germany.

The Indian defence produced a much-better display in the second game, and were able to absorb pressure from the Spanish strikers.

Germany, who will be playing their first match of the India leg, are placed just above India in seventh place with four points from as many games and will be determined to turn their fortunes around.

Although Germany have won only one match in the tournament so far, their attack has been spearheaded by Raphael Hartkopf, Gonzalo Peillat, and Thies Prinz, who have scored two goals each.

Germany will aim to turn around their struggling campaign and secure vital points.

The two sides last met during a two-match Test series in New Delhi in October 2024, where Germany won the first game 2-0, but India bounced back in the second with a thrilling 5-3 victory.

However, Germany went on to claim the series through a shootout win.

Speaking on the upcoming matches, Harmanpreet said, "We are looking forward to our games against Germany. They are a quality team, and we know we need to bring our best performance to the field.

"After the positive result against Spain, our confidence is high, but we know there's still work to be done. One of our main focuses is improving our penalty corner conversion, as it's crucial to make the most of those opportunities in tight matches."

"The team is motivated and ready to build on the momentum from our last game. We've learned from both the matches, and we're determined to bring our best performance to the field," he added. PTI SSC SSC AH

Australian team arrives in Pakistan for Champions Trophy

Lahore, Feb 17 (PTI) The Australian cricket team arrived in Pakistan on Monday to participate in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy.

The tournament begins with a match between hosts Pakistan and New Zealand in Karachi on Wednesday.

Pakistan are also the defending champions having won the last edition of the tournament in 2017 in the UK where they beat India in the title clash.

"The Australian cricket team has arrived in Lahore for the @ICC #ChampionsTrophy 2025! They will play their first match of the tournament on 22 February against England at the Gaddafi Stadium," the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) posted on X.

The team landed in two separate groups. The first batch, which included captain Steve Smith, coaches, and support staff, arrived from Colombo via Dubai.

The second group, comprising 15 players and two additional members of the support staff, followed the same route and reached Lahore later the same day.

Like India, who will be playing all their matches in Dubai as per the hybrid model agreement, the Australian team will also not feature in any warm-up matches, as they were very recently involved in a two-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, which they lost 2-0.

After their opener against traditional rivals England, Australia will play their second match against South Africa on February 25 at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, followed by a final group-stage outing against Afghanistan on February 28, again at Gaddafi Stadium.

Australia squad: Steve Smith (captain), Sean Abbott, Alex Carey, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aaron Hardie, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Marnus Labuschagne, Glenn Maxwell, Tanveer Sangha, Matthew Short, Adam Zampa. PTI AH s AH APA

Pro League: Indian women aims to return to winning ways against Spain

Bhubaneswar, Feb 17 (PTI) The Indian women's hockey team will be eager to get back to winning ways when it faces a confident Spain in the doubleheader here.

After a promising start with a thrilling 3-2 victory over England in their opener, the India narrowly missed out on a bonus point in their second game, losing 2-1 in a dramatic shootout after the match ended 2-2 in regulation time.

Despite showing resilience, India currently sit in eighth place in the standings with four points from two games and will be looking to climb higher in the points table as they face a confident Spanish side on Tuesday and Wednesday.

India's performance against England offered glimpses of their potential, particularly in penalty corner conversions, where they scored twice from three attempts in their opening match.

However, they failed to replicate that success in the second game, unable to convert any of their three penalty corners.

"Spain is a tricky team, and we know it’s going to be a challenging contest. However, we are ready for the challenge," India captain Salima Tete said.

"We've analysed our performances against England and identified the areas where we need to improve, especially in converting penalty corners. We are focused on tightening our defense and making the most of our scoring opportunities."

Spain, on the other hand, arrives on the back of two consecutive victories against Germany in the India leg. They secured back-to-back 2-1 wins over the Germans, boosting their confidence.

Despite their strong recent performances, Spain has had a mixed run overall, with just two wins and one shootout victory in six games.

Currently placed fourth in the points table with eight points, Spain will be looking to further consolidate their position. Patricia Alvarez has been their standout player, scoring twice to lead the team’s goal tally.

Match starts 5:15 PM on Tuesday and 7:30 PM on Wednesday. PTI APA BS

Bumrah's absence has given Bangladesh glimmer of hope: Imrul Kayes

New Delhi, Feb 17 (PTI) Former Bangladesh opener Imrul Kayes reckons the absence of Jasprit Bumrah will provide his team an opportunity to put India's pace attack under pressure when the two teams open their Champions Trophy campaign on February 20.

India go into the game as overwhelming favourites as Bangladesh enter the tournament at the back of a long struggling spell in the ODIs.

“India is a strong side with a great bowling attack and batting lineup. But Bumrah is not in the squad. We all know what he has done in the last two years for Indian cricket. His absence gives Bangladesh a chance to capitalize,” Kayes told PTI Videos.

Kayes played 39 Tests, 78 ODIs and 14 T20s for Bangladesh.

In Bumrah's absence, a rusty Mohammed Shami will lead India's pace attack including Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh.

“Shami’s inclusion is big. He may be struggling a bit with fitness right now, but if he finds his rhythm, he will be a big threat for Bangladesh,” Kayes noted.

Bangladesh will be without veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and out of form batter Litton Das.

Kayes said Shakib's absence is bound to be felt.

"I definitely miss Shakib because he is a very good player. His impact on any match is immense. At the moment, Bangladesh is struggling. They are struggling because if Shakib is not playing, Bangladesh might play an additional spinner. That’s the main problem.

"Litton’s form was a big concern for the team. But in the last few BPL matches, he did score some runs. However, Soumya Sarkar and Tanzid Tamim have performed better, and I think the team is in good shape in that department," said Kayes.

With Shakib missing, Kayes expects vice-captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz to step up as Bangladesh’s premier all-rounder.

“If you see Mehidy Hasan, when he came to the national team, he was new, but his courage is amazing. His character shows he is a champion player. He doesn’t care about anybody; he always believes, ‘I will do it.’

“Mehidy can bat anywhere. In the 2018 Asia Cup final, he opened the batting against India. Shakib can also bat anywhere. So, if you compare, Mehidy will probably fill the gap.

“But bowling-wise, Bangladesh will miss Shakib because he is a left-handed spinner. The impact he creates with his bowling is invaluable for our team,” he emphasised. PTI HN

MI look to put run-out controversy behind against Gardner-led Gujarat Giants

Vadodara, Feb 17 (PTI) Gujarat Giants will seek more runs from their top-order to extend their belligerent run with the bat while Mumbai Indians will look to hit their strides after a tough opener in the Women's Premier League here on Tuesday.

Gujarat Giants, who finished last in the previous two seasons, seem to have fix their batting woes with Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner doing the heavy lifting in the first two games.

Beth Mooney has scored a fifty at the top of the order but her opening partner Laura Wolvaardt is yet to come good.

Giants amassed 201 in their opening game but still lost before Gardner ensured they gunned down a 144-run target rather comfortably.

The pressure is increasing on the Indian batters to deliver especially number three D Hemalatha.

With the ball as well, captain Gardner has led from the front and has got good support from leg-break bowler Priya Mishra.

Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, would like to put the controversy over multiple run-outs in their tournament opener behind when they take the field against Giants.

The positives from their last-ball loss to Delhi Capitals came via Nat Sciver Brunt and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, who both seemed at their destructive best.

Making a comeback from injury, opener Yastika Bhatia needs to have a productive season. Mumbai Indians will also expect more from the lower middle order comprising Sajeevan Sajana and Amanjot Kaur.

Skipper Harmanpreet had rued the lack of partnerships in the middle phase that led to Mumbai Indians losing their way after batting first against Delhi Capitals.

"Playing full 20 overs and whoever is there, that batter should bat till the end. Even myself I should have continued till the end. Our batters need to take more responsibility in the next game," she said.

On the bowling front, Mumbai Indians can always rely on South Africa pacer Shabnim Ismail, who remains as potent as ever despite retiring from international cricket in 2023.

Squads:

Gujarat Giants: Beth Mooney (wk), Laura Wolvaardt, Dayalan Hemalatha, Ashleigh Gardner (c), Deandra Dottin, Simran Shaikh, Harleen Deol, Tanuja Kanwar, Sayali Satghare, Priya Mishra, Kashvee Gautam, Meghna Singh, Danielle Gibson, Phoebe Litchfield, Mannat Kashyap, Shabnam Shakil, Prakashika Naik, Bharti Fulmali.

Mumbai Indians: Hayley Matthews, Yastika Bhatia (wk), Nat Sciver-Brunt, Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Amelia Kerr, Sajeevan Sajana, Amanjot Kaur, Jintimani Kalita, Sanskriti Gupta, Shabnim Ismail, Saika Ishaque, Keerthana Balakrishnan, Chloe Tryon, Parunika Sisodia, Amandeep Kaur, G Kamalini, Akshita Maheshwari, Nadine de Klerk.
