PM Modi to initiate debate on Vande Mataram in LS on Monday

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will initiate the debate on the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram in Lok Sabha on Monday, which is expected to bring to light several important and previously unknown facets about the national song.

Lok Sabha has listed 'Discussion on the 150th anniversary of national song Vande Mataram' on Monday and allocated 10 hours for the debate.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to be the second speaker in the debate that will also see the participation of Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra among other members.

The debate in Parliament is part of the year-long celebrations on the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, a poem written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, and set to tune by Jadunath Bhattacharya.

Prime Minister Modi had hit out at the Congress, accusing it of removing key stanzas from the song in 1937 and sowing the seeds of partition.

On November 7, Modi launched year-long celebrations to commemorate the 150th year of Vande Mataram aimed especially at youth and students to deepen awareness of the song's significance.

"Many important and unknown facets related to Vande Mataram will come out in front of the nation during the debate," officials said.

Home Minister Amit Shah will initiate the discussion in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday and Health Minister and Leader of the Rajya Sabha J P Nadda will be the second speaker.

Lok Sabha will also take up the debate on election reforms, which will cover all aspects of the contentious subject, including the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls, on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Rajya Sabha will take up the debate on election reforms on Wednesday and Thursday.

The proceedings on the first two days of the Winter session that started on December 1 were disrupted due to the opposition's protests on the SIR leading to repeated adjournments.

The Monsoon session of Parliament was a virtual washout over the demand by the opposition for a debate on the SIR, then being held in Bihar. PTI ACB/SKU DV

Cong seeks thorough probe into Goa nightclub fire; Rahul alleges criminal failure of governance

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) The Congress on Sunday demanded a comprehensive investigation and strict accountability for the tragic fire at a nightclub in Goa that killed 25 people, with Rahul Gandhi claiming it was a criminal failure of safety and governance.

The fire broke out at Birch by Romeo Lane, a popular nightclub at Arpora village in North Goa, early Sunday, killing at least 25 people, including four tourists and 14 staff members, and injuring six others.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge expressed his deepest condolences to those who lost their loved ones in the blaze.

“This avoidable tragic incident is an irreparable loss, and I pray for the speedy recovery of all those who have been injured.

“Such tragedies call for a comprehensive investigation, strict accountability, and immediate steps to ensure that all fire safety norms are enforced, so that such devastating incidents are never repeated,” Kharge said in a post on X.

The veteran leader also appealed to all the Congress workers in the coastal region to extend every possible support and assistance to the affected families and stand with them in this hour of grief.

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, said he was deeply pained by the tragic fire in Arpora.

“My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wishes for the speedy recovery of the injured. This is not just an accident; it is a criminal failure of safety and governance. A thorough, transparent probe must fix accountability and ensure such preventable tragedies don't occur again,” Gandhi said in an X post.

Congress general secretary in charge of organisation, K C Venugopal, sought fixing of accountability for the tragic blaze so that such incidents are not repeated.

"The fire at a night club in Arpora, Goa, is shocking and I convey my heartfelt sympathies to the families of the victims who lost their lives.

"This tragedy took place because of the negligence of the authorities in enforcing fire safety norms. We urge a thorough and impartial investigation to identify those responsible and to ensure accountability, so that such a tragedy is never repeated," he said in a post on X. PTI SKC ARI

SC to hear wife's plea challenging Sonam Wangchuk's detention on Monday

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) The Supreme Court will on Monday hear a plea filed by Gitanjali J Angmo, wife of jailed climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, terming his detention under the National Security Act “illegal, and an arbitrary exercise violating his fundamental rights”.

A bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and N V Anjaria is likely to hear the matter.

On November 24, the top court had deferred the matter after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre and the UT of Ladakh, sought time to respond to the rejoinder filed by Angmo.

On October 29, the top court sought responses from the Centre and the Ladakh administration on an amended plea of Angmo.

According to the amended plea, “The detention order is founded upon stale FIRs, vague imputations, and speculative assertions, lacks any live or proximate connection to the purported grounds of detention and is thus devoid of any legal or factual justification...

“Such arbitrary exercise of preventive powers amounts to a gross abuse of authority, striking at the core of constitutional liberties and due process, rendering the detention order liable to be vitiated by this court.”

The plea said it is wholly preposterous that after more than three decades of being recognised at the state, national, and international levels for his contributions to grassroots education, innovation, and environmental conservation in Ladakh and across India, “Wangchuk would suddenly be targeted”.

Angmo said the unfortunate events of violence in Leh on September 24 cannot be attributed to the actions or statements of Wangchuk in any manner.

Wangchuk himself condemned the violence through his social media handles and categorically stated that violence would lead to the failure of Ladakh's "tapasya" and peaceful pursuit of five years, Angmo said, adding that “it was the saddest day of his life”.

Wangchuk was detained under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) on September 26, two days after violent protests demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh left four people dead and 90 injured in the Union territory. The government had accused him of inciting the violence.

The NSA empowers the Centre and states to detain individuals to prevent them from acting in a manner "prejudicial to the defence of India". The maximum detention period is 12 months, though it can be revoked earlier. PTI PKS ARI

IndiGo to operate 1,650 flights on Sunday, cancels 650

Mumbai, Dec 7 (PTI) IndiGo is operating 1,650 flights of its 2,300 daily domestic and international flights on Sunday, and 650 remain cancelled for the day, amid the airline's operations gradually stabilising after massive disruptions in the last five days, the airline said.

IndiGo also said it is expecting to stabilise the network by December 10 against the earlier anticipated timeline of December 10-15.

In another development, the airline saw its on-time performance from six metro airports on Saturday improving to 20.7 per cent, as per the Civil Aviation Ministry website.

It operated more flights on Saturday at around 1,500 against about 800 cancellations.

The disruptions have resulted in hundreds of flight cancellations and delays in the last few days, causing hardships to thousands of passengers.

"Following the recent operational disruptions, IndiGo confirms that we are establishing further significant and sustained improvements across our network. On Sunday, we are on track to operate over 1,650 flights, up from around 1,500 flights on Friday," an IndiGo spokesperson said in a statement.

Friday was the worst for the airline in its history as it cancelled around 1,600 flights in the wake of the crew shortage, following the implementation of the second phase of the court-mandated new flight duty and rest period norms, which are applicable to all domestic airlines, but have now been relaxed for IndiGo by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

The spokesperson said the airline is making "very significant" progress in restoring its flight schedules and strengthening the customer support systems.

Also, cancellations were made at an earlier stage, allowing the airline to inform customers timelier, IndiGo said, adding that its teams are working to stabilise operations.

The refund and luggage process is in full action for direct and indirect bookings, it said while urging customers to check the latest flight status on its website before proceeding to the airport, as we are diligently working to improve our operations.

"We continue to work closely with all authorities and stakeholders to ensure a swift return to full normalcy," the spokesperson said. PTI IAS RAM BAL

25 killed in massive blaze at nightclub in Goa; violation of safety norms suspected

Panaji, Dec 7 (PTI) Weekend revelry turned into a horrific tragedy as a massive fire tore through a nightclub in North Goa after midnight on Sunday, claiming 25 lives and leaving six persons injured.

Most of the deaths were caused by suffocation, as the victims got trapped on the ground floor of `Birch by Romeo Lane' nightclub at Arpora, 25 km from Panaji, a fire official said.

The construction was unauthorised but the demolition notice served to the club had been stayed by a higher authority, claimed a village official, as Chief Minister Pramod Sawant vowed action against officials who allowed it to operate despite the violation of safety norms.

The deceased included four tourists and 14 staff members, while the identity of the remaining seven was yet to be established, the police said.

President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, among others, expressed grief over the loss of lives.

A preliminary inquiry indicated that the fire started on the first floor, and due to congestion and small doors, customers could not move out. "Some of them rushed to the ground floor and got trapped there," CM Sawant said.

“We will take action against the club management and also against the officials who allowed it to operate despite flouting safety norms,” Sawant said. A First Information Report (FIR) was registered against the owner and general manager of the nightclub and they would be arrested, he added.

“This is an unfortunate incident during the peak tourist season in the coastal state,” the CM said, adding, “We will conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident by a magistrate and stringent action will be taken against the guilty.”

While the state police initially said the blaze occurred due to a cylinder blast, some eyewitnesses claimed the fire started on the club's first floor where tourists were dancing.

At least 100 persons were on the dance floor when the fire broke out, and in an attempt to escape, some of them ran downstairs to the kitchen where they got trapped along with the staff, Fatima Shaikh, a tourist from Hyderabad, told PTI.

"There was a sudden commotion as the flames started erupting. We rushed out of the club only to see that the entire structure was up in flames," she said.

The nightclub was jam-packed as it was the weekend, she said.

In no time, the entire club was engulfed flames. “There was a temporary construction made up of palm leaves which easily caught fire,” said Shaikh.

The nightclub is situated in the backwaters of the Arpora river and has a narrow entry and exit. There was no access for the fire brigades to the club because of the narrow lanes and their tankers had to be parked about 400 metres away from the spot.

A senior officer from the Fire and Emergency Services told PTI that the narrow access made it difficult to reach the spot, which in turn made controlling the blaze a challenging task.

Most of the deaths were caused by suffocation as the victims remained trapped on the ground floor, he said.

Arpora-Nagoa panchayat sarpanch Roshan Redkar said the club was run by Saurav Luthra, who had a dispute with his partner.

“There was a dispute between them and they had filed a complaint against each other with the panchayat. We had inspected the premises and found that they did not have the permission to construct the club,” he said.

The panchayat had issued a demolition notice, which was stayed by the officials of the Directorate of Panchayats, Redkar said.

Distraught relatives and friends of the victims gathered outside the morgue of the Goa Medical College and Hospital, anxiously awaiting information about their loved ones.

Some of them, hailing from a village in Jharkhand, said they would not accept the bodies and demanded that the nightclub owner arrange for the mortal remains to be transported back home.

Four persons from their village worked as helpers and cooks at the nightclub, they said.

Another group of five persons from Assam was also seen sitting outside the morgue. While they refused to talk to the media, one of them claimed that some of the fire victims were their friends.

A senior police official said that it will take a day to identify all the bodies and conduct the postmortem, only after which the mortal remains will be handed over to their relatives.

The Goa Church expressed grief over the loss of lives in the incident.

The state Aam Aadmi Party unit claimed the Sawant government has lost the "moral right" to stay in power, as it had failed to control the administration.

AAP Goa president Amit Palekar, in a post on X, questioned why the government had not taken any action against the nightclub, which had allegedly not followed norms despite the issue being raised in the state assembly. PTI RPS ABS ACB DV ARU VT GK GK KRK

India inaugurates new state-of-the-art Consulate building in Shanghai

Beijing, Dec 7 (PTI) India on Sunday opened its new state-of-the-art Consulate building in Shanghai, marking its first relocation in 32 years in China’s main business hub.

The Shanghai Consulate caters to India’s burgeoning business community in the eastern region of China, home to top trade and business hubs like Yiwu, where a number of Indian businesses are present.

The sprawling new Chancery building at the prominent Dawning Centre in Changning District, covering 1,436.63 sqm -- more than double the size of the previous one -- was inaugurated by Indian Ambassador to China Pradeep Kumar Rawat.

It will commence full operations from its new premises on December 8, a press release by the Consulate said.

Underlining the importance of the opening of the new Consulate for the first time since 1992, Rawat said this year remains special as India and China celebrated the 75th year of diplomatic ties.

Shanghai remains unique for its ties with India, now represented by a truly world-class international level Consulate General of India, he said, according to details provided by Indian officials.

Over 400 guests, including members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the Shanghai Municipal Government, and members of the Indian diaspora from Shanghai, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Suzhou, Nanjing, Yiwu, Keqiao and other cities under the Consulate’s jurisdiction were present at the opening, the press release said.

Consul General Pratik Mathur in his address reaffirmed the Consulate’s commitment to ensuring seamless services for Indian nationals and Chinese partners.

Thanking the Ministry of External Affairs and local Shanghai authorities for their support, he said the expansion enables the consolidation of consular, commercial, cultural, and administrative functions on a single, secure, modern floorplate. This, he said, will result in enhanced efficiency and improved public service delivery in providing seamless services for Indian nationals and Chinese partners.

Highlighting the significance of strengthening India’s oldest consular presence in mainland China, he added that the Dawning Centre’s location in the Hongqiao–Gubei foreign business corridor, home to several diplomatic missions and major multinational corporations, offers the Consulate an excellent strategic vantage point.

Its proximity to the Hongqiao transportation hub and the Gubei international community further supports the Consulate’s expanding engagement across East China, Mathur said in his speech posted on X.

Reflecting India’s broader approach to inclusive and people-centric governance, Mathur said that the move aligns with the spirit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.

The upgraded facilities, he added, embody this ethos by enabling better service delivery to the entire Indian community and all stakeholders engaging with the Consulate.

The opening also comes at a time of renewed dynamism in bilateral exchanges, he said, highlighting initiatives such as the recently opened direct flights between India and Shanghai, which will further strengthen trade, travel, and business linkages, making the enhanced capacity of the new Chancery particularly timely.

“As we step into this beautiful new chapter, let us together make this Chancery not just an office, but a vibrant hub of friendship, commerce, culture, and people-to-people ties between India and the Eastern China region,” he said. PTI KJV GRS GRS

Expect govt to convert 40 GW of uncontracted renewable energy capacity to FDRE option: Suzlon

Puducherry, Dec 7 (PTI) Suzlon Group Vice Chairman Girish Tanti expects the government to convert over 40 GW of uncontracted renewable energy capacity to the FDRE option, which is more reliable compared to plain wind and solar projects.

An FDRE (Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy) project integrates advanced solar, wind and battery energy storage systems (BESS) to enable reliable energy dispatch during the peak demand.

As per an official document, there is around 45.34 GW capacity for which power purchase agreements (PPAs) are yet to be signed. The government is actively working on solutions for these awarded projects.

The winners of these tenders are also engaged with distribution companies (discoms), which are the potential buyers, to reach an understanding for PPAs.

Meanwhile, the four renewable energy implementing agencies (REIAs), namely SECI, NTPC, NHPC and SJVN, have proposed the auction of tendered electricity capacity as an option to solve the issue.

"Right now, this capacity is under reassessment by the Government of India...Once they evaluate, they will come up with a solution. My hunch is it will move to become FDRE," Tanti said.

His comments assume significance as India aims to meet the goal of having 500 GW capacity through non-fossil fuel-based sources.

Tanti exuded confidence in the acceptance of FDRE by consumers despite the tariff difference, as it is a more reliable source of clean energy compared to simple wind and solar.

Tariff rates of the solar projects range from Rs 2.38 to Rs 2.56 per unit, while those of wind projects range from Rs 3.70 per unit to Rs 3.90 per unit.

He said price discovery through FDRE has happened at Rs 5.5 per unit.

"At Rs 5.5 per unit today, you can get 24X7 power with wind, solar and battery, which is still cheaper than your coal power. Now, we are competing with coal for the 24-hour supply. Most likely that capacity in some form or another will become FDRE," Tanti said.

Sources said states have also raised concerns over intermittency in plain vanilla solar and wind projects. PTI ABI BAL

NCR Transport Corp launches campaign for safe escalator use on Namo Bharat corridor

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) In a bid to enhance commuter safety on the high-speed Namo Bharat corridor, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation has launched a special awareness campaign on the safe use of escalators across its stations, officials said on Sunday.

Under the initiative, teams from the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) and its operations and maintenance partner, DB RRTS India, interacted with commuters at several Namo Bharat stations, as well as with the passengers aboard trains, to spread awareness about basic escalator safety rules and responsible travel behaviour.

In the first phase, the campaign covered high-footfall stations including Anand Vihar, Ghaziabad, and Meerut South to maximise outreach, according to a statement.

During the interactions, commuters were advised to hold the handrail while using escalators, avoid rushing, refrain from mobile phone usage, and use elevators while carrying heavy or bulky luggage.

They were also informed about the location and proper use of emergency stop buttons. Banners and posters highlighting key safety messages were displayed prominently within station premises, it said.

Special emphasis was laid on child safety, with staff sensitising commuters travelling with children about necessary precautions such as holding children's hands firmly, keeping them away from the edges, and preventing them from running or playing on escalators.

NCRTC said commuter safety remains its top priority, and awareness drives like these play a crucial role in strengthening a culture of safe travel and ensuring a secure and reliable experience for all Namo Bharat users.

To further strengthen security, all Namo Bharat stations and trains are equipped with round-the-clock CCTV surveillance monitored from a Central Security Control Centre. Each station also has a dedicated police room for quick coordination with local authorities, while commuter screening at entry points is carried out through multi-zone Door Frame Metal Detectors (DFMDs).

At present, a 55-km stretch between New Ashok Nagar and Meerut South of the 82-km-long Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor, covering 11 stations, is operational. The remaining section is expected to be opened to the public soon, the statement said. PTI NSM PRK PRK

Mandhana, Palash announce end of relationship; urge privacy

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) India batter Smriti Mandhana on Sunday announced that her wedding had been called off and urged fans and media to stop the speculation, while music composer Palash Muchhal confirmed that he had "decided to move on" from the relationship.

Muchhal also warned of legal action against those spreading defamatory rumours.

Mandhana, one of India's most prominent women cricketers, issued her first public statement on social media after rumours about her personal life had intensified over the past month.

She was supposed to marry Muchhal on November 23 but the wedding was postponed after Mandhana's father, Shriniwas was hospitalised due to a heart ailment.

"I need to clarify that the wedding is called off. I would like to close this matter here and implore all of you to do the same," she wrote.

"Over the past few weeks there has been plenty of speculation around my life and I feel it is important for me to speak out at this time," she said in an Instagram post.

Calling herself a "very private person", Mandhana said the need to set the record straight compelled her to speak.

She requested fans and the public to "respect the privacy of both families" and allow them the "space to process and move on".

Mandhana, who is preparing for India's upcoming international season, said her focus remains firmly on cricket.

"I believe there is a higher purpose driving us all and for me that has always been representing my country at the highest level. I hope to continue to play and win trophies for India for as long as possible," she said.

Soon after Mandhana's post, Palash Muchhal issued his own statement, confirming that he had "decided to move on" and expressing anguish over what he described as baseless online chatter.

"I have decided to move on in my life and step back from my personal relationship. It's been very difficult for me to see people react so easily on baseless rumours about something which has been most sacred to me.

"It's the most difficult phase of my life and I will deal with it gracefully holding on to my beliefs," he wrote.

He urged the public to reflect before amplifying unverified claims.

"I truly hope we, as a society, learn to pause before judging someone based on unverified gossip, whose sources are never identified. Our words can wound in ways we may never understand," he added.

Muchhal also said his team would take legal action against those spreading defamatory content.

"My team will be taking strict legal action against those spreading false and defamatory content," he said, thanking those who had supported him with "kindness" during this period.

The development comes days after singer Palak Muchhal, sister of Palash, spoke on the issue.

"I think the families have been through a very tough time... we would like to spread positivity as much as we can. We are also trying to stay strong," she had said.

Both statements come against the backdrop of intensified social media discussions and unverified reports, prompting public figures to step in to curb conjecture.

Mandhana, 28, has been a central figure in Indian women's cricket for nearly a decade, and her presence in the batting line-up has been crucial across formats. With India set for a busy 2026 calendar, the left-hander reiterated that her professional commitments remain her priority.

"Thank you for all your support. It's time to move forward," her note concluded. PTI AT AM AT AM

Goa nightclub fire tragedy extremely heartbreaking: Jharkhand CM

Ranchi, Dec 7 (PTI) Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Sunday said the loss of lives in a fire accident at a nightclub in Goa was "extremely heartbreaking".

The chief minister extended prayers for the swift recovery of those injured in the incident.

At least 25 people were killed, and six others suffered injuries in the blaze that broke out after midnight at Birch by Romeo Lane in Goa's Arpora village, situated around 25 km from the capital, Panaji.

"The news of several people dying in a massive fire at a nightclub in Goa is extremely heartbreaking. May Marang Buru (the supreme tribal deity) grant peace to the souls of the departed and give strength to the grieving families to endure this hour of sorrow," Soren posted on X.

"I pray for the swift recovery of those injured in the accident," Soren added.

Soren's wife and JMM legislator Kalpana Soren also expressed grief over the incident.

"The fire incident in Goa nightclub is extremely tragic. Hearing the news of several people losing their lives in this accident has left me deeply distressed," she posted on X.

She added, "May God grant peace to the departed souls and provide strength to their families during this difficult time. I pray that all those injured in the accident recover swiftly." PTI NAM RG

Defence Minister dedicates 125 BRO projects to nation

Leh, Dec 7 (PTI) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh dedicated 125 newly completed projects of Border Roads Organisation to the nation from Leh on Sunday, calling them a "vivid example" of government's commitment to bolstering India's border infrastructure.

These strategically significant projects -- built at a cost of Rs 5,000 crore and spread across the Union Territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir, and seven states including Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Mizoram -- consisted of 28 roads, 93 bridges and four miscellaneous works.

The event marked the largest single-day and highest-value inauguration in the history of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta received the defence minister upon his arrival in Leh and joined him in the inauguration event.

"The valour and bravery of our soldiers are in themselves an inspiration for us. These infrastructure projects are the nation's tribute to those heroes who laid down their lives in the service of the nation," the defence minister said.

He said border roads are the "lifelines of national security" and improved connectivity has a direct impact on operational readiness.

"Enhanced road networks, real-time communication systems and satellite-based surveillance are now allowing Indian soldiers to operate with greater speed and precision in forward areas," he said.

Singh praised the BRO for consistently finishing projects ahead of schedule and adopting new technologies aligned with the government's vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India).

He emphasised that stronger border connectivity not only fortifies security, but also stabilises local economies, enhances disaster response -- as seen during rescue operations after cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmir's Chasoți -- and strengthens people's faith in governance in remote regions.

"Our armed forces, BRO personnel, and citizens of border areas together form a collective shield of national security," Singh said, urging that their bond must continue to grow.

The defence minister underlined that the 920-metre Shyok Tunnel, constructed along the Darbuk-Shyok-Daulat Beg Oldi Road in Ladakh, is an engineering marvel that will provide all-weather connectivity to one of the most difficult military terrains in the world.

The tunnel, he said, will sharply enhance mobility, logistics delivery and rapid deployment capability, particularly during harsh winters marked by heavy snowfall and avalanches.

"Our brave soldiers in the armed forces and all BRO employees are continuously working for the country. The spirit you have to work in any weather, in any situation, is why our country is continuously touching new heights," he said.

Singh said the completion of 125 projects in record time is proof of the resolve for a developed India and a vivid example of the government's unwavering commitment to strengthening border infrastructure.

The newly inaugurated projects will enhance mobility of the armed forces, ensure smooth delivery of logistics, boost tourism, generate employment opportunities and increase economic activities, the defence minister said.

Most importantly, such projects strengthen people's faith in development, government, the system and democracy, he added. PTI TAS TAS RUK

Our forces could have done much more during Operation Sindoor but chose restraint: Rajnath

Leh, Dec 7 (PTI) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said the armed forces “could have done much more” during Operation Sindoor in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, but deliberately opted for a “restrained” and “calibrated” response.

The operation in May underscored both the capability and discipline of the Indian forces, who neutralised terror threats without escalation, Singh said.

“During Operation Sindoor, the coordination we witnessed among our armed forces, the civil administration, and the citizens of the border areas was incredible. I express my gratitude to every citizen of Ladakh as well as the border areas for extending their support to our armed forces,” the defence minister said after inaugurating 125 infrastructure projects in different parts of the nation, which were completed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

“This coordination is what defines our identity. It is our mutual bond that gives us the most distinct identity in the world,” Singh said.

Operation Sindoor was launched by the Indian armed forces on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), to avenge the April 22 Pahalgam attack in Kashmir that claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists.

“Just a few months ago, we witnessed how, in response to the heinous terrorist attack in Pahalgam, our armed forces executed Operation Sindoor, and the world knows what they did to the terrorists.

“Of course, we could have done much more had we wanted, but our forces demonstrated not only valour but also restraint, doing only what was necessary,” the defence minister said.

Stressing that such a massive operation became possible due to strong connectivity, Singh said, “Our armed forces were able to deliver logistics right on time. Connectivity with the border areas was also maintained, giving Operation Sindoor its historic success.”

The defence minister added that improved connectivity in the border areas is transforming security in multiple ways and enabling troops to operate more effectively in difficult terrains.

“Today, our soldiers stand strong in difficult terrains because they have access to roads, real-time communication systems, satellite support, surveillance networks, and logistics connectivity.

“Every minute, every second of a soldier deployed on the border is extremely important. Therefore, connectivity should not be viewed merely as limited to networks, optical fibre, drones, and radars, but rather as the backbone of security,” Singh said.

The defence minister added that if he can meet the armed forces in any corner of the country, it is possible only because of strong communication networks and connectivity.

“Communication should not be viewed merely in terms of infrastructure. It is a very broad term. Communication is essential for peace, harmony, and understanding of society,” he said, adding that the government’s constant endeavour has been to strengthen communication and connectivity with all the border areas, including Ladakh.

The Central government is working with full enthusiasm for the holistic development of the border areas, he said.

“Our government, our armed forces, and organisations such as the BRO stand with you. We just need to keep strengthening this bond so that our relationship is not affected by any external element,” the defence minister said.

He added that improved connectivity is not only strengthening security and infrastructure but also driving economic growth.

Citing the 8.2 per cent GDP expansion in the second quarter of 2025-26, Singh said stronger communication and connectivity networks have been a key enabler, supported by the government’s pro-growth policies and nationwide reforms. PTI TAS ARI

'Endless opportunities' for collaboration between Israel and India: Israeli officials

Jerusalem, Dec 7 (PTI) The ties between Israel and India are "very strong" and there are "endless opportunities" for collaboration between the two countries, Israeli officials have said while describing the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) project as a "very good" initiative.

They also said the two countries can work together, along with partners in the international community, to encourage states to assert their authority over all activities within their borders and ensure that non-state actors do not play a significant role.

"The ties between Israel and India are very, very strong and getting even stronger. Both civilian and I think also in terms of military cooperation, defence cooperation," a senior Israeli foreign ministry official said here while talking to a group of Indian journalists.

Another official from the foreign ministry said there are "endless opportunities" for the two countries to work together.

Speaking about the IMEC project, the official said that for Israel, it's a "very, very good initiative".

"It's something that we are really looking into. At the moment, there are two countries which are not part of the signatory - Jordan and Israel. And for the first stage, this is what we're looking to see: these two countries are part of the larger framework," the official said.

The IMEC, a transformative initiative aimed at boosting connectivity, trade, and sustainability across three regions, was formed on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Delhi in September 2023.

An agreement was signed by India, Saudi Arabia, the European Union, the UAE, the US and some other G20 partners for the corridor.

Less than a month after the IMEC launch, Hamas launched a multi-front attack on Israel on October 7 that impacted the project.

"It's true that the 7th of October attack actually put a lid for the moment on all these initiatives... There's a lot of hesitation for other countries as to how they should be included when there's still a war going on. And even though there's a ceasefire, there's a peace plan by (US President Donald) Trump, there's still hesitation. What if a war breaks out again?" said the senior diplomat.

"So, I think it would still take time. There's nothing at the moment Israel can do to persuade or to progress unless Saudi Arabia sees some kind of progress in Gaza, because Saudi Arabia clearly said that it has to give something to the Palestinians...any gesture that can pacify the Palestinians before it goes on and normalises relations with Israel," the official said.

"Until that happens, we don't see how we can move forward, but we are laying the foundation with Americans, with the Emirates...with other neighbouring countries. So when the time comes, we can pick up from where we left off...." the official added.

The senior diplomat described the IMEC as an "amazing project", saying it would stabilise the area and the regional countries could gain from it.

Many strategic affairs watchers have described the IMEC as perhaps an answer to China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a multi-billion-dollar infrastructure and connectivity project that involves dozens of countries.

The official also said Israel is pushing India, as well as the rest of the world, to designate Hamas as a terror outfit.

"Is there a doubt that Hamas is a terrorist organisation after the October 7 (attack)? Is there doubt about what they have (done)? Their actions... the way they operate... their activities?" the official asked.

The official said that India's listing of Hamas would have a “strong global impact".

It will send a "very strong message" to the world, because there are a lot of neighbouring countries that look up to India, and when India declares something, it has a great impact.

“It sends a message that India has clearly seen what Hamas is doing, and no operative should step on Indian soil," the official said.

On the two-state solution, the official said India has a very clear understanding of policy, promoting the two-state solution, seeing the two nations living side by side, and it has never neglected this policy.

"We respect that. We don't see the vision at the moment of this happening, especially when you don't have the right reforms and conditions from the Palestinian side," the official added.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, another official said that there was a thought in Israel that possibly Iran would shift its approach and maybe stop the proxy war after what happened to Hezbollah, Hamas and the Operation Rising Lion.

"But the understanding now is that there was no shift, and Iran is doubling down and reinvesting in the proxy system with slight changes as to where to put the emphasis," the official said.

The unnamed official said that America's maximum pressure campaign against Iran has to be "much more maximum" than it is. Iran is still a "big threat", he added.

Maj Gen (Res.) Amir Baram, Director General of the Israel Ministry of Defence (IMOD), recently said that Israel is "deeply engaged" in developing next-generation breakthrough technologies for potential future confrontations with Iran, in both defensive and offensive capabilities.

"All fronts are still open, and our enemies are learning and preparing. This transitional period brings uncertainty and risks, but also significant strategic opportunities for those who understand the moment," he said. PTI ZH

Giving men a common antidepressant could help tackle domestic violence: world-first study

Sydney, Dec 7 (The Conversation) In April 2024, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese declared domestic and family violence a “national crisis” calling for proactive responses that “focus on the perpetrators and focus on prevention”.

The issue hasn’t really improved since then.

But a world-first trial from the University of New South Wales and University of Newcastle, which tested whether medicine can reduce violence and domestic violence, may offer a new way forward.

A comprehensive approach to a complex problem

------------------------------------------------------

The trial tested whether sertraline – a commonly prescribed antidepressant – could reduce violent reoffending in impulsive men.

We screened 1,738 men in NSW between 2013 and 2021, ultimately randomising 630 participants to receive either sertraline or placebo in a “double-blind” trial. This means researchers, nurses, psychiatrists and participants didn’t know which men were on sertraline or placebo.

Most participants were recruited through community corrections offices and courts.

The results for the effect of sertraline for general violence were inconclusive.

However, those who took sertraline showed significant reductions in domestic violence reoffending:

1) at 12 months, offending was lower in the sertraline group (19.1 per cent) compared to placebo (24.8 per cent)

2) at 24 months, offending was lower in the sertraline group (28.2 per cent) compared to the placebo group (35.7 per cent).

3) For men who took their medication more consistently, the reduction in reoffending reached 30 per cent at 24 months.

How does sertraline work?

------------------------------

The antidepressant sertraline works by enhancing serotonin functioning in the brain, which plays a crucial role in regulating impulse control and emotional responses.

For highly impulsive men, this directly addresses a key driver of violence – the inability to pause and regulate emotional reactions.

Domestic violence frequently involves emotionally charged, impulsive reactions in intimate relationships. The type of anger and aggression in these reactive contexts is theorised to be most responsive to regulating brain serotonin neurotransmission.

General violence is far more diverse, including premeditated acts that are typically less reactive.

During an initial four-week period before randomisation, all participants received sertraline and we observed a:

1) 55 per cent reduction in depression

2) 44 per cent in psychological distress

3) 35 per cent in anger

4) 25 per cent in irritability

5) 20 per cent in impulsivity.

These changes occurred before most of the trial’s psychosocial supports could take full effect, demonstrating the medication’s direct impact.

One participant with significant prison time told us: "I was in a road rage situation, a guy jumped out of his car, having a go at me, and any other time I would have smashed him. But I just said, ‘mate go away before the police are called’. I dead set believe it was due to the medication. I feel proud, it’s been a long time but hey, I’ve finally got control of myself.

The crucial role of comprehensive support

---------------------------------------------

The medication’s effectiveness depended on participants actually taking it and staying engaged long enough for it to work. This is where the comprehensive support provided became essential.

Many participants had issues such as homelessness, untreated mental health disorders, substance use, relationship crises, disengagement from health services and conflicts with government institutions.

Many men had “fallen through the cracks”, because their cases are too complex for mental health services or standard corrections programmes. This in turn means they were unable to access the support they needed.

We realised administering medication without addressing these broader psychosocial needs would be failing in our duty of care.

So our study evolved to include a comprehensive support model, combining pharmacotherapy with trauma-informed clinical counselling, proactively following up participants, 24-hour crisis support, helping the men navigate support services and partner safety planning.

This proved crucial for higher engagement, which led to better outcomes.

Perhaps most strikingly, sertraline reduced the rate of repeated domestic violence offending (more than one offence in 24 months) by 44 per cent compared to placebo.

These findings reveal a key relationship: sertraline improves a range of behavioural measures and reduces impulsivity. Meanwhile comprehensive psychosocial support addresses the trauma, social disadvantage and unmet needs that maintain patterns of emotional reactivity and violence.

As one participant reflected: "I’ve evolved […] I was actually stepping back and listening to what other people had to say before I blew my top."

What about partners and family members?

-----------------------------------------------

Our research revealed 96 per cent of partners reported maintained or increased safety, 85 per cent observed positive behavioural changes (in the men) and 77 per cent reported improved personal wellbeing.

One partner noted: "I used to sleep with a hammer under my bed. Since he started this medication, I can sleep more easily, and I don’t need to sleep with the hammer anymore."

Reframing domestic violence

--------------------------------

When we help men address the psychological, relational and social factors that drive their domestic violence, we’ve shown we can prevent harm before it occurs.

The men in our trial had extensive trauma histories, with many having experienced childhood abuse, marginalisation and conflict with government institutions.

This perspective by no means diminishes the devastating harm and impact of domestic violence or the need for essential victim supports. Nor does it reduce the importance of addressing structural determinants of domestic violence such as gender inequality or outdated cultural norms.

But the current crisis demands evidence-based interventions that can reduce domestic violence now, while complementary efforts continue to support victims.

A way forward

-----------------

Our trial demonstrated this approach is cost-effective: at about AUD 7,000 per participant annually versus AUD 150,000 for incarceration.

The model’s independence from mainstream services proved crucial for engagement. Operating through a university research programme rather than government systems helped build trust with men who had extensive negative experiences with institutions.

We do not claim our approach to be a silver bullet, but it deserves serious consideration as a proven intervention in the domestic violence prevention ecosystem, and could be implemented now. (The Conversation)

Sri Lanka's Kandy: a lesson in climate change, human error

Colombo, Dec 7 (PTI) Cyclone-struck Sri Lanka's Kandy district -- the seat of the last Royal kingdom of Ceylon -- suffered extensive damage and was the worst-hit by the Ditwah disaster, which has claimed a total of 618 lives in the island nation.

Catastrophic floods and landslides following Cyclone Ditwah have left Sri Lanka grappling with severe infrastructure collapse as search operations continue for those buried under landslides a week after the disaster struck the country.

Surrounded by three mountain ranges and set in a basin-like valley, Kandy city escaped direct damage except for disruptions to its road network, electricity, and communication.

However, the devastation in the district’s outer areas in the rural heartland was disastrous.

Till Saturday night, Kandy district had accounted for 232 of the 618 deaths verified so far. It leads with 91 disappearances and 1,800 fully destroyed homes.

Uprooted trees alongside badly damaged structures are a common sight, and rescue teams are still struggling to reach some of the villages cut off from road access there.

An expert indicated that "unplanned and haphazard settlements" were a cause of the disaster.

One such village is in the Minipe administrative division, 75 miles east of the city, 145 feet above sea level.

Here unfolded the tragic tale of the village of Nelummala (the lotus flower).

Around 5:30 in the evening on November 27, boulders came descending from a nearby range, burying all 21 houses in the village, along with the people inside.

"I managed to save six of them,” Rev Palletanne Chandrananda, 34, a Buddhist monk who ran a Buddhist school in the village, told PTI on the phone.

He believes over 30 people are dead while the search is still on.

Once a beautiful, quaint village amidst acres of paddy fields, it now stands as a site of boulders and loose earth with not a trace of the happier times.

A female villager who did not want to be identified said she was thankful to the monk for her survival. “We do not know what to do now, how to restart our lives, school books, clothes and everything lost,” she said.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake visited the district on Saturday and told the officials that allowing unauthorised construction of premises was as much of a problem as the nature of the disaster.

No constructions in danger areas will be allowed in future, he said.

The president also pledged a SLR 5 million grant to construct a new house for fully destroyed homes and a SLR 5 million grant for land acquisition to rebuild homes lost to the disaster.

Kalum Samarasena, a university lecturer based in Kandy, said that while unplanned, haphazard settlement was a cause, the policymakers need to think more deeply.

“What happened in places like Minipe is a warning – a warning on climate change," Samarasena told PTI.

“The government must start planning settlements from now on. Giving cash handouts is not the answer. People will naturally go back to their old places with cash. They must be resettled on state lands with necessary precautions to face disasters as these in a planned way," Samarasena said.

The cyclone wreaked havoc in the island nation and severely strained Sri Lanka's disaster-response capacity, and various nations, including India, are assisting in the rehabilitation process.

What our missing ocean float revealed about Antartica’s melting glaciers

Sydney, Dec 7 (The Conversation) Sometimes, we get lucky in science. In this case, an oceanographic float we deployed to do one job ended up drifting away and doing something else entirely.

Equipped with temperature and salinity sensors, our Argo ocean float was supposed to be surveying the ocean around the Totten Glacier, in eastern Antarctica.

To our initial disappointment, it rapidly drifted away from this region. But it soon reappeared further west, near ice shelves where no ocean measurements had ever been made.

Drifting in remote and wild seas for two-and-a-half years, the float spent about nine months beneath the massive Denman and Shackleton ice shelves. It survived to send back new data from parts of the ocean that are usually difficult to sample.

Measurements of the ocean beneath ice shelves are crucial to determine how much, and how quickly, Antarctica will contribute to sea-level rise.

What are Argo ocean floats?

-------------------------------

Argo floats are free-floating robotic oceanographic instruments. As they drift, they rise and fall through the ocean to depths of up to 2 kilometres, collecting profiles of temperature and salinity. Every ten days or so they rise to the surface to transmit data to satellites.

These floats have become a mainstay of our global ocean observing system. Given that 90 per cent of the extra heat stored by the planet over the past 50 years is found in the ocean, these measurements provide the best thermometer we have to track Earth’s warming.

Little buoy lost

-----------------

We deployed the float to measure how much ocean heat was reaching the rapidly changing Totten Glacier, which holds a volume of ice equivalent to 3.5 metres of global sea-level rise. Our previous work had shown enough warm water was reaching the base of the ice shelf to drive the rapid melting.

To our disappointment, the float soon drifted away from Totten. But it reappeared near another ice shelf also currently losing ice mass and potentially at risk of melting further: the Denman Glacier. This holds ice equivalent to 1.5m of global sea-level rise.

The configuration of the Denman Glacier means it could be potentially unstable. But its vulnerability was difficult to assess because few ocean measurements had been made. The data from the float showed that, like Totten Glacier, warm water could reach the cavity beneath the Denman ice shelf.

Our float then disappeared under ice and we feared the worst. But nine months later it surfaced again, having spent that time drifting in the freezing ocean beneath the Denman and Shackleton ice shelves. And it had collected data from places never measured before.

Why measure under ice?

----------------------------

As glaciers flow from the Antarctic continent to the sea, they start to float and form ice shelves. These shelves act like buttresses, resisting the flow of ice from Antarctica to the ocean. But if the giant ice shelves weaken or collapse, more grounded ice flows into the ocean. This causes sea level to rise.

What controls the fate of the Antarctic ice sheet – and therefore the rate of sea-level rise – is how much ocean heat reaches the base of the floating ice shelves. But the processes that cause melting in ice-shelf cavities are very challenging to observe.

Ice shelves can be hundreds or thousands of metres thick. We can drill a hole through the ice and lower oceanographic sensors. But this is expensive and rarely done, so few measurements have been made in ice-shelf cavities.

What the float found

------------------------

During its nine-month drift beneath the ice shelves, the float collected profiles of temperature and salinity from the seafloor to the base of the shelf every five days. This is the first line of oceanographic measurements beneath an ice shelf in East Antarctica.

There was only one problem: because the float was unable to surface and communicate with the satellite for a GPS fix, we didn’t know where the measurements were made.

However, it returned data that provided an important clue. Each time it bumped its head on the ice, we got a measurement of the depth of the ice shelf base. We could compare the float data to satellite measurements to work out the likely path of the float beneath the ice.

These measurements showed the Shackleton ice shelf (the most northerly in East Antarctica) is, for now, not exposed to warm water capable of melting it from below, and therefore less vulnerable.

However, the Denman Glacier is exposed to warm water flowing in beneath the ice shelf and causing the ice to melt. The float showed the Denman is delicately poised: a small increase in the thickness of the layer of warm water would cause even greater melting.

What does this mean?

-------------------------

These new observations confirm the two most significant glaciers (Denman and Totten) draining ice from this part of East Antarctica are both vulnerable to melt caused by warm water reaching the base of the ice shelves.

Between them, these two glaciers hold a huge volume of ice, equivalent to five metres of global sea level rise. The West Antarctic ice sheet is at greater risk of imminent melting, but East Antarctica holds a much larger volume of ice. This means the loss of ice from East Antarctica is crucial to estimating sea level rise.

Both the Denman and Totten glaciers are stabilised in their present position by the slope of the bedrock on which they sit. But if the ice retreated further, they would be in an unstable configuration where further melt was irreversible. Once this process of unstable retreat begins, we are committed. It may take centuries for the full sea-level rise to be realised, but there’s no going back.

In the future, we need an array of floats spanning the entire Antarctic continental shelf to transform our understanding of how ice shelves react to changes in the ocean. This would give us greater certainty in estimating future sea-level rise. (The Conversation) GRS

Security forces foil attack on Jaffar Express in Pakistan

Karachi, Dec 7 (PTI) Security forces foiled an attempt to attack the frequently-targeted Jaffar Express passenger train in Pakistan's Balochistan province, according to a media report on Sunday.

Unidentified insurgents planted an improvised explosive device (IED) on the track used by the Peshawar-bound train in the Nasirabad area of the province on Saturday, the Dawn newspaper reported.

Law enforcement agencies cordoned off the area after receiving information about the device and defused it, the report said, quoting a police official.

The attack attempt comes almost a month after the train narrowly escaped an explosion in the same area. Months before that, it came under a deadly insurgent attack that left 26 people dead.

Meanwhile, the Peshawar to Quetta Jaffar Express was stopped at Jacobabad due to security reasons.

Another train was also halted there. According to the report, services for these trains will be resumed after the situation is assessed.

It is not the first time insurgents have attacked the Jaffar Express, and its service has already been hit multiple times this year.

The most devastating attack came on March 11, when the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) hijacked the Jaffar Express with 380 passengers on board, triggering a two-day standoff in a mountainous area and claiming 26 lives. Security forces later rescued around 354 passengers, while 33 insurgents were killed.

In October, several people were injured in a blast that occurred on a railway track, which derailed five bogies of the train in Sindh province. PTI GRS

NZ is taking aim at feral cats. Are we ready for the ethical and practical implications?

Wellington, Dec 7 (The Conversation) Conservationists have long anticipated the recent announcement that the national effort to eradicate possums, stoats and rats will now include feral cats.

But the government’s decision steers New Zealand’s Predator Free 2050 mission into potentially fractious territory.

It suggests conservation messaging has effectively recast wild-living cats as predators. In doing so, they become the kind of problem that can be solved through the conventional logic of pest control.

The new policy rests on a crucial distinction between feral cats and others, and hinges on their degree of human attachment. A feral cat has no human relationships, while domestic and stray cats have greater involvement in human worlds.

Legally, feral cats are already classified as pests and research suggests this designation is broadly accepted. But as one pest control operator recently told me, even a pet cat in a cage looks and acts feral if it is trapped and afraid.

Conversely, stray and feral cats are often re-homed and made into loving companions. Indeed, cats show remarkable behavioural flexibility – a reminder that deterministic assumptions about species can be risky.

Making feral cats a target species also reflects culture change in real time. There is nothing “natural” about which animals we choose to kill and which we choose to protect.

Although some species’ deaths are widely normalised – think of the few animals we kill in their millions for food – that sense of normality is shaped by deliberate efforts to frame certain animals in particular ways.

As several commentators have noted, the idea of eradicating cats caused public dismay only a decade ago. Today, it is not only thinkable, but doable.

How cats became Predator Free’s next target

--------------------------------------------------

The culture shift is likely due to several things, possibly including a growing confidence in the Predator Free mission, careful coalition building by the National Cat Management Group, and a wave of research into cats’ ecological impacts.

We have also heard sustained and strategic messaging from Predator Free that describes cats as “among the most devastating predators in Aotearoa”.

But feline flexibility – cats’ ability to be both a smoochy pet and a stealthy killer, potentially both over the course of a lifetime or even a day – might also be cause for caution.

At a recent Predator Free hui (gathering), for instance, one volunteer asked for tips on what to do with a trapped cat. The cautionary response was that the cat might be shot or possibly bludgeoned. (The Animal Welfare Act prohibits drowning because of its cruelty.)

This is quite different from the trapping methods mainly used now, and from the kinds of lethal actions volunteer trappers normally carry out.

Current guidelines say kill traps should only be used in very remote areas; everywhere else, live-capture cage traps are the only option. The result, as you’d expect, is a live, enclosed cat.

Kill traps that meet National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee standards are a kind of “moral delegate”. They remove some of the ethical complexity from the act of killing and make the job more straightforward.

Killing live-trapped cats could instead invite a degree of moral reflection –perhaps even prompt a wider conversation about animal welfare.

Predator Free 2050’s 2020 strategy made no mention of animal welfare, beyond citing the Animal Welfare Act. And its latest research strategy is similarly focused elsewhere.

But the addition of feral cats to the official predator list is an opportunity to engage with these difficult questions. Should anyone be able to kill a trapped cat? What standards and protocols might be necessary?

The cultural catch with cats

-------------------------------

It’s easy to see why welfare has not been front and centre of pest control conversations to date.

Until now, the Predator Free 2050 target species have been firm cultural outcasts, regarded as an ecological problem and laden with unfavourable symbolic associations. Cats, even feral ones, are a different beast.

Rather than being associated with viciousness, dirtiness and overpopulation like many other pests, cats are more commonly associated with companionship and cuteness.

Even their hunting skills have historically been a source of value and appreciation, as testified by the use of cats as “ratters” in workplaces, homes and ships.

Although only feral cats fall under the Predator Free remit, their domestic counterparts are already part of the conversation as well.

For example, the multi-stakeholder National Cat Management Group is proposing a National Cat Management Act as part of a broader, welfare-oriented cat strategy that encompasses feral, stray and companion animals.

This too raises questions about what kinds of social creatures we think cats are, or want them to be. Should they become family members who stay in the home? Or do people want cities and neighbourhoods where they encounter cats as well as birds in public spaces?

And what about us? What kind of “cat people” are we? (The Conversation) GRS

It’s important for criminal sentences, but how do we know if someone’s remorseful?

Sydney, Dec 7 (The Conversation) The story lines of every episode of legal TV dramas, from Law & Order to Perry Mason, revolve around five key narrative moments: the crime, the arrest, the plea, the verdict, and the offender’s emotional response to what they’ve done.

While the verdict provides the audience with its emotional pay-off, it’s the fifth moment that determines how they will remember the character. Did they apologise and seek forgiveness, or did they refuse to accept responsibility? Or worse still, appear to revel in the chaos they had caused?

This American pop culture illustration reflects a larger truth. The courts, the media and the public are all watching for the same thing: whether the accused is genuinely sorry. Are they remorseful?

The legalities of remorse

----------------------------

In all Australian jurisdictions, remorse is recognised as a mitigating factor in sentencing.

While a lack of remorse will not aggravate (increase) a sentence, a sincere expression of remorse can reduce a sentence, especially if accompanied by an early guilty plea.

Two recent manslaughter cases before the Supreme Court of New South Wales highlight how remorse affects sentencing.

Zachary Fraser was found guilty of the manslaughter of Darcy Schafer-Turner in 2023. In his ruling, Justice Nicholas Chen found Fraser to be “genuinely remorseful”.

A further sign of Fraser’s remorse was his early guilty plea, which resulted in a 25 per cent reduction in his sentence. As a result, he was handed a backdated four-year sentence and will be eligible for parole in July 2027.

Contrast this with the Robert Huber case, another NSW offender, charged with the manslaughter of Lindy Lucena in 2023. Justice Stephen Rothman concluded in his ruling, “I do not consider that he has genuine remorse for his actions”.

While sentencing is complicated and isn’t decided by any single factor, and in NSW the law prohibits the lack of remorse from being used as an aggravating factor, a 12-year prison sentence was imposed.

But how do we know who’s remorseful?

--------------------------------------------

Since the first sentencing report I wrote as a probation officer, and throughout my subsequent work as a criminal lawyer, remorse and how to identify whether someone is remorseful have remained intriguing puzzles for me.

My latest research project investigates the role of sentencing report writers in assessing remorse. Through detailed surveys and interviews, I’m examining how they construct and evaluate remorse during the sentencing process.

Even with these new data, remorse remains resistant to a clear definition. As one of my interviewees stated, remorse is “more of a gut feeling or intuition”.

Sentencing report writers also emphasised the importance of body language as an indicator of remorse, noting that the accused may perform remorse rather than genuinely feel it. Very few, however, can consistently perform their non-verbal cues.

Still, the idea that body language can be accurately interpreted is not supported by the evidence, except possibly for eye contact.

Even judges, traditionally the barometers of remorse, cannot agree on what it looks like. While supporting an approach grounded in legal doctrine, many describe it as a “feeling” and express varied views on the indicators of remorse.

Expressions of remorse also require a certain type of verbal performance, which may have a strong class component.

There is also evidence that race can play a role in how people judge the emotions of others. Black people are more likely to be judged as being angry while showing the same facial expressions as white people.

Yet, despite evidence of cultural, class, and gender differences in the expression and detection of emotions, there has been a surprising lack of focus on developing strategies to address them.

An inexact science

---------------------

Over recent decades, sentencing has become more complex and time-consuming for judges.

Sentencing is now highly visible, contentious and politicised. Increased time constraints on judicial officers may lead them to seek assistance from experts in tasks once solely within the province of the sentencing judge, including the assessment of remorse.

As reports and sentencing decisions continue throughout an offender’s sentence and life, the information within them is repeated and shared. This can influence how all subsequent decisions — such as sentencing, risk assessment, classification, access to programmes, and ultimately parole — are made.

But people are complicated. There are a lot of things that can affect our demeanour, communication styles and expressions.

These include cultural norms, maturity, socioeconomic factors, disabilities, neurodivergence, or congenital cognitive disorders like Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

It’s therefore crucial to develop a deeper understanding of how remorse is interpreted and judged to safeguard fairness and human rights. (The Conversation) GRS

Indian envoy discusses rehabilitation, reconstruction in cyclone-hit Sri Lanka with Foreign Minister Herath

Colombo, Dec 6 (PTI) Indian envoy on Saturday met Sri Lankan Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath and discussed cooperation in the reconstruction and rehabilitation process in the aftermath of cyclone Ditwah that wreaked havoc in the Island nation.

At least 618 people have died, and 209 are missing as of Saturday evening 8 pm, due to the catastrophic floods and landslides caused by extreme weather conditions since November 16, according to Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Centre (DMC).

India was the first country to respond to Sri Lanka’s international appeal for assistance under its Operation Sagar Bandhu.

High Commissioner Santosh Jha met Vijitha Herath and discussed the “ongoing Indian assistance to Sri Lanka under #OperationSagarBandhu” High Commission of India in Colombo posted on social media on Friday.

He also discussed “avenues of cooperation during the reconstruction and rehabilitation phases in the aftermath of #CycloneDitwah,” it added.

Jha also briefed Sri Lankan corporate leaders about New Delhi's “response and continued commitment” to the cyclone-hit island nation in its resurgence from the disaster that has claimed over 600 lives so far.

He met Sri Lankan corporate leaders associated with the ‘Rebuilding Sri Lanka Fund’ as the island nation is grappling with widespread flooding, landslides and severe infrastructure collapse following Cyclone Ditwah.

During his meeting with the corporate leaders, Jha discussed the "way ahead for rehabilitation and recovery", the Indian High Commission said in an X post.

He also briefed them on the elements of "India‘s response and continued commitment to stand by Sri Lanka in its resurgence from this crisis," it added.

In another such initiative, Sri Lanka Ashok Leyland handed over seven utility vehicles to support relief and recovery efforts nationwide.

“In the presence of High Commissioner @santjha, Hon.

@SunilHandun Sri Lanka Minister of Industry & Entrepreneurship Development, and Hon Maj Gen (Rtd.) Aruna Jayasekara, Deputy Minister of Defence, Lanka Ashok Leyland, handed over 7 utility vehicles worth over Rs. 65 million to support relief and recovery efforts nationwide. Adding to this spirit of support, employees contributed Rs. 2.5 million, reinforcing solidarity on the ground,” the Indian mission said.

India’s humanitarian assistance has continued across land and air, focusing on both emergency response and sustained medical care, it said in a press release.

Since the launch of Operation Sagar Bandhu on November 28, India has provided more than 58 tonnes of relief material, including dry rations, tents, tarpaulins, hygiene kits, water purification kits and around 4.5 tonnes of medicines and surgical equipment.

Another 50 tonnes of equipment, including generators, inflatable rescue boats, and Outboard Motors, have been provided, and 130 tonnes of Bailey Bridge units have been airlifted along with 31 engineers to restore critical connectivity.

The Indian Engineer Corps is conducting surveys and reconnaissance for the construction of Bailey Bridges on vital road routes to restore connectivity in flood-hit areas.

On Saturday, a ship laden with 950 tonnes of essential goods, including 300 MT rice, was dispatched by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin.

It is carrying clothes and food to be distributed among those affected by the cyclone following a request made by the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission in Chennai, according to the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry.

“India was the first country to respond. India sent helicopters and rescue teams. They sent food and medicine very quickly,” Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said, calling the response received from the international community to Sri Lanka’s appeal "overwhelming".

Under Operation Sagar Bandhu, two columns of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), comprising 80 experts and K9 units with specially trained dogs, conducted rescue and relief operations, evacuating around 150 stranded persons.

A full-fledged field hospital with 78 medical personnel from India is now providing life-saving care in Mahiyanganaya near Kandy.

It was airlifted by the Indian Air Force on Wednesday.

In its first 24 hours, the facility provided much-needed medical care to around 400 patients affected by the cyclone, conducted 55 minor procedures and an operation, the High Commission said in an X post.

Commander of the Sri Lanka Army Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo reviewed the field hospital and thanked the Indian government for its swift response and for ensuring that critical medical care reaches those in need.

Medical centres have also been set up using the BHISHM (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog Hita and Maitri) Arogya Maitri cubes in the badly hit Ja-Ela and Negombo.

"India’s medical teams continue to stand beside Sri Lanka, ensuring that timely care reaches those in need," the X post said.

Meanwhile, INS Vikrant, INS Udaygiri and INS Sukanya have provided immediate rescue and relief assistance to Sri Lanka. Apart from the two Chetak helicopters deployed from INS Vikrant, two heavy-lift MI-17 helicopters of the Indian Air Force are actively involved in evacuations and airlifting relief material.

Further, about 2,500 stranded Indians were evacuated from Sri Lanka, including more than 400 on IAF aircraft.

The NDRF teams, which returned home on Friday, worked closely with Sri Lankan authorities and conducted extensive search, rescue and relief operations.

The teams evacuated around 150 people, assisted vulnerable groups including pregnant women and the physically challenged, recovered mortal remains, distributed over food packets, and restored safe water by de-watering contaminated wells.

Indian Air Force helicopters remain at the frontline of aerial operations, and safely airlifted those affected from Kotmale to Katunayake on Thursday for further medical care and support.

On Friday, Indian MI-17 helicopters evacuated seven survivors and airlifted 9.5 tonnes of relief material under the coordination of Sri Lankan authorities, the Indian mission said. PTI CORR/GRS RD

PTI ABI BAL

Home loan portfolio cross Rs 9 lakh cr milestone, RAM to drive 14 pc loan growth: SBI Chairman

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) SBI Chairman C S Setty said the bank's mortgage loan portfolio has crossed Rs 9 lakh crore last month and expressed optimism that the momentum in the RAM segment will drive 14 per cent overall credit growth during the current fiscal year.

Retail, Agriculture and MSME (RAM) segment, which is 67 per cent of the total loan portfolio, has also crossed Rs 25 lakh crore milestone in September.

With the improvement in economic growth, SBI upped its credit growth target from earlier 12 per cent to 14 per cent for the ongoing financial year.

"We increased guidance on credit growth. We have revised it from 12 per cent to 14 per cent. We see a robust credit growth, particularly from the RAM segment, MSME is almost growing at 17-18 per cent and agriculture and retail is around 14 per cent," he told PTI in an interview.

Besides, he said, the bank is witnessing good growth in gold loan while express credit, which is unsecured personal loan, will have double-digit growth.

Corporate credit, which had been slow for some time, saw a turnaround with 7.1 per cent growth during the second quarter.

"Our guidance on the corporate credit would be in lower double digit, which means that overall, 12-14 per cent credit growth rate seems to be achievable," he said.

The Reserve Bank's decision to further slash the key policy rate by 25 basis points would make loans cheaper and drive demand for fresh credit.

Setty, the chairman of the country's biggest lender, had expressed confidence of achieving its 3 per cent net interest margin guidance even despite RBI's 0.25 per cent repo rate cut in the December policy.

Last week, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) lowered the repurchase, or repo rate, by 25 basis points to 5.25 per cent and retained a neutral stance, which gave room for further rate cuts. The rate cut came after a gap of six months with a view to further bolster growth which hit six quarter high of 8.2 per cent in Q2 of FY26.

The SBI chairman also said the bank may not need equity capital to drive credit growth and maintain a capital adequacy ratio of 15 per cent over 5-6 years.

"Even before this QIP was raised, our ability to fund credit growth has never been a problem. We wanted to strengthen the capital ratios, so we have. Our long-term strategy is to maintain CRAR at 15 per cent and Common Equity Tier 1 at 12 per cent," the chairman said.

This kind of Capital to Risk Asset Ratio (CRAR) gives the bank the ability to fund advances over Rs 12 lakh crore, Setty said.

"With a profit rate like what we have today, if the same profitability is maintained for another 5-6 years, we may not require any capital raising, at least on the CET 1 part," he said. PTI DP AA TRB

JRB Group eyes Rs 1,000 cr turnover by FY32

Mumbai, Dec 7 (PTI) JRB Group aims to reach about Rs 1,000 crore in revenue in the next five years, supported by expansion across its portfolio of brands, including Sagar Ratna, Swagath, and Ocean World, according to a senior company executive.

"The group revenue in 2024-25 stood at over Rs 450-400 crore. Currently, we are growing at 12-15 per cent annually from our existing business. With the major expansion plans we have lined up across our portfolio of brands, including Sagar Ratna, Swagath, and Ocean World, we expect to reach a revenue of Rs 900-1,000 crore over the next five years," JRB Group managing director Roshan Banan told PTI.

The Group is planning to double its south Indian vegetarian cuisine brand Sagar Ratna, with over 125 outlets across the country, in the next 3 to 5 years, he said.

"Today, we stand at the total count of Sagar Ratna franchise as well as company stores at around 170. This includes 10-12 outlets to be opened in the next six months. We expect to add another 26-27 outlets by FY27. We are mainly looking to expand in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Besides, we also have Bangalore and all major cities across all states on our radar for this growth," he added.

For this expansion of the Sagar Ratna brand, the company has a capex of Rs 30-35 crore, which will be spent over a span of two years (FY27), and funded through internal accruals and debt.

JRB Group operates its Sagar Ratna chain of restaurants through company-owned and franchise models.

However, Banan said, going forward, the company will slowly move away from the franchise model.

"We are sort of curtailing the franchise business, and we are going with the company-owned stores. Going forward, we are looking at about 80 per cent company-owned and 20 per cent franchise stores. We are mainly looking to expand in locations like malls, airports, high streets and food courts," he added.

Banan said the company is also foraying overseas in the next six months by opening two Sagar Ratna outlets in Europe.

"In December-March, we will be opening our first outlet in the Netherlands and Luxembourg, where the market is ripe and not very saturated. In the next three years, we will be covering the entire Europe. We plan to have our presence in every major country in Europe. America and Southeast Asia are also under our radar for overseas expansion," he said.

The company is keen on South Asian markets like Singapore, Malaysia and Japan for the opening of its Sagar Ratna outlet, he said, adding that JRB Group is planning to open one restaurant in Japan next year.

The company is also planning to expand its fine-dining coastal seafood cuisine brand Swagath, which currently has 13 outlets.

"For our Swagath brand, which operates completely in the company-owned model, we are very choosy and going slow with three outlets every year on average in India. We may have two outlets overseas per year as well. By FY27, we may have added around 5 outlets across India and maybe 2 overseas, one each in the Netherlands and Luxembourg," he said.

Talking about its hospitality brand Ocean World, Banan said, the company currently has 7 properties mainly based in Karnataka in the luxury 4-star category.

"In the next 5 years, we are adding 4 more properties, 2 in Tirupati and 2 in Bangalore, which are around 100-130-key hotels. Going forward, we are looking at Bangalore as the city is growing with a lot of IT companies entering.

"So, the demand for hotel rooms is also growing in the city. Even as we are limited to this region, but as and when the opportunity arises, we are open to operating in other parts of India as well," he added. PTI SM BAL

Not issued any advisory to stop finance to renewables: MNRE

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy on Sunday clarified that it has not issued any advisory to financial institutions to stop lending to renewable energy projects or to RE equipment manufacturing facilities.

This comes amid reports suggesting that the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) has issued an advisory to lenders to pause fresh financing to renewable energy projects amid significant overcapacity concerns, an MNRE statement said on Sunday.

"It is hereby clarified that MNRE has not issued any advisory to financial institutions for stopping lending to either renewable energy power projects or to renewable energy equipment manufacturing facilities," it said.

However, it stated that the MNRE has circulated to the Department of Financial Services and NBFCs like PFC, REC and IREDA, the status of present installed domestic manufacturing capacities across various sectors of solar PV manufacturing so that the financial institutions can adopt a calibrated and well-informed approach while evaluating proposals for financing any manufacturing facility in solar PV manufacturing sector.

The Government of India is committed to make India self-reliant in solar PV manufacturing and establish the country as a major player in the global value chain, it stated.

This commitment is supported through a comprehensive set of initiatives, including the PLI Scheme for High Efficiency Solar PV Modules and measures to provide a level-playing field for Indian manufacturers, it said.

The catalytic effect of these interventions has resulted in an expansion in solar module manufacturing capacity, from just 2.3 GW in 2014 to around 122 GW enlisted in MNRE's Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) today, it added.

The ministry will continue engaging with stakeholders to ensure India's solar journey remains inclusive, competitive, and future ready, it stated.

India has already achieved 50 per cent of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, five years ahead of the target set under its Nationally Determined Contributions to the Paris Agreement.

As of October 31, 2025, the installed capacity from non-fossil sources stands at about 259 GW, with 31.2 GW added in the current financial year up to October 2025, it stated. PTI KKS TRB

SoftBank-backed AceVector files updated IPO papers; targets to raise Rs 300 cr via fresh issue

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) SoftBank-backed digital-commerce ecosystem AceVector Ltd has filed updated draft papers with markets regulator Sebi for an initial public offering (IPO), which will include a fresh issue of shares worth Rs 300 crore.

In addition to the fresh issue, the IPO will also involve an offer for sale (OFS) of 6.38 crore shares by existing shareholders, according to the updated draft red herring prospectus (UDRHP).

As part of the OFS, promoter Starfish I Pte Ltd and other shareholders Nexus, Wonderful Star Pte. Ltd, Kenneth Stuart Glass, Jason Ashok Kothari, Priyanka Shreevar Kheruka, Rupen Investment and Industries, and Centaurus Trading and Investments will offload their holdings.

Despite the share sale by several investors, AceVector's promoters and founders Kunal Bahl and Rohit Bansal, who together hold a 34.63 per cent stake, will not participate in the OFS.

This comprises Bahl's individual shareholding of about 12.42 per cent Bansal's individual shareholding of about 11.14 per cent and an additional 11.07 per cent held through their jointly owned entity, B2 Professional Services LLP.

However, another promoter entity Starfish, which owns 30.68 per cent stake in the company, will be divesting part of its stake.

The company plans to use the IPO proceeds to strengthen technology infrastructure, support marketing and business promotion for Snapdeal, pursue inorganic growth through acquisitions, and meet general corporate requirements.

The Gurugram-based company operates Snapdeal, a value-focused lifestyle e-commerce marketplace; Unicommerce, an e-commerce enablement SaaS platform; and Stellaro Brands, an omnichannel consumer brands arm.

Financially, AceVector reported operating revenue of Rs 244 crore in H1 FY26, up 34 per cent from Rs 181 crore in H1 FY25.

During the same period, its adjusted EBITDA loss narrowed significantly to Rs 9.2 crore from Rs 28 crore a year earlier.

AceVector had initiated its IPO journey earlier this year by filing confidential draft papers with Sebi in July and subsequently securing approval in November.

By opting for the confidential pre-filing route, the company gained the flexibility to delay public disclosure of IPO details until the later stages. PTI SP TRB

Bank of Maharashtra slashes retail loan rates by 25 bps

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) Public sector lender Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) on Sunday announced reduction in interest rates by 25 basis points on retail loans, including home, car, education and other loans linked with Repo Linked Lending Rate (RLLR) in line with the RBI rate cut.

With the revision effective Saturday, the bank's home loan starts from 7.10 per cent interest rate and car loan from 7.45 per cent, which is among the lowest in the banking industry, BoM said in a statement.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday lowered the repurchase, or repo rate, by 25 basis points to 5.25 per cent and retained a neutral stance, which gave room for further rate cuts.

"This benefit of reduced interest rates reflects the bank's commitment to offer best financing solutions to all its customers and help them fulfil their dreams. In the current high-interest rate landscape, the bank is making retail loans cheaper to bring in cheer among customers," it said. PTI DP TRB

Coking coal imports rise in Oct on winter restocking, general coal shipments decline

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) Coal imports in October saw a mixed trend with general coal shipments declining while coking coal imports rose.

The fall in overall coal imports was on account of availability of surplus coal in the domestic market.

Coking coal shipments increased 12 per cent to 5.04 million tonnes (MT) during the month over 4.50 MT a year earlier, driven primarily by winter restocking activities by steel mills.

Coking coal is a critical raw material used in steel production.

Overall coal imports in October dropped 3.9 per cent to 20.97 MT over 21.84 MT in the year-ago period, according to B2B e-commerce platform mjunction services ltd.

According to industry experts, steel manufacturers typically boost coking coal purchases ahead of the colder months to secure raw material supplies for sustained production during winter, when transportation and logistics face disruption risks. This seasonal demand prompted the rise in coking coal imports despite the broader slowdown in coal shipments.

Looking ahead to the fourth quarter, import levels are expected to remain subdued.

"During the coming months, imports are expected to remain subdued due to higher domestic production in the fourth quarter (January-March)," mjunction MD & CEO Vinaya Varma said.

Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan had informed Parliament that efforts are being made on a continuous basis to ensure more domestic supplies of coal. Thus, the entire substitutable imported coal is expected to be met by the country and no import other than the very essential should happen.

A new sub-sector 'Steel using Coking coal through WDO (washery developer operator) route' was created in 2024 with an aim to increase domestic coking coal consumption and also increase availability of washed coking coal in the country, thereby reducing coking coal imports.

Coking Coal Mission has been launched to enhance coking coal supply to the steel sector to reduce imports of coking coal. Initiatives have been taken to enhance coking coal production. PTI SID TRB

IL&FS to initiate process before NCLT to recover Rs 187 cr excess remuneration paid to ex-directors

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) The IL&FS Group will initiate before insolvency tribunal NCLT the process to recover Rs 187 crore excess remuneration paid to its former directors and two subsidiaries, who have refused to return the excess managerial remuneration, according to the latest affidavit filed by the debt-ridden firm before NCLAT.

Moreover, IL&FS is also going to reopen the financial statements for 2018-19 and 2019-20. It has received approval from NCLT for incorporating impacts arising from the recast financial statements.

"Such revised financial statements for FY 2018-19 have been prepared and are being audited by statutory auditors appointed by NCLT. The revised financial statements will be finalised before the end of 31st December 2025," the IL&FS Group said.

Last year, books of accounts and financial statements of IL&FS and its two subsidiaries -- IFIN and ITNL -- were recast on the directions of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) for five years -- FY 2013-14 to FY 2017-18 -- and a loss of around Rs 9,600 crore was found.

Based on this, IL&FS is in the process of recovering Rs 187 crore from the directors and independent directors of the previous board, during whose tenure the company and its two subsidiaries -- IFIN and ITNL -- were shown in profit of Rs 1,869 crore, through financial engineering, though they were in loss.

"IL&FS is now in process of filing an application with the NCLT for recovery of excess managerial remuneration from its erstwhile whole-time directors and is in the process of finalising the next steps with respect to pursuing recovery from the erstwhile Independent Directors in accordance with guidance received from its legal advisors," according to the latest affidavit filed before the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal.

IL&FS said it will file an application before the NCLT against the erstwhile whole-time directors, who owe nearly 90 per cent of the total dues, and also seek recovery from independent directors of these three companies.

In pursuance of the audited re-casted financial statements of 2013-14 to 2017-18, three IL&FS entities had already issued notices.

IL&FS has issued 10 letters dated August 13, 2024, IFIN has issued 12 letters dated August 14, 2024 and ITNL sent 12 letters dated August 14, 2024, to their respective erstwhile directors seeking recovery of about Rs 187.02 crore as excess monies/remuneration paid to them.

In this, two independent directors, each from IL&FS and ITNL, have voluntarily repaid the amounts sought, without admitting liability, while the rest are contesting the demand, according to industry observers.

Moreover, its former executive and whole-time directors have responded stating, among other things, that the provisions of sections 197 and 198 and part II of Schedule V are not applicable to them.

Several other key independent directors who were on the boards of IL&FS and two step-down units are RC Bhargava, Rina Kamath, SB Mathur, among others.

Section 199 of the Companies Act has provisions for recovery by the company in case of fraud or non-compliance from management.

These submissions form part of the affidavit filed by IL&FS to NCLAT, updating its resolution status every six months.

In the latest affidavit, the IL&FS Group said it has discharged Rs 48,463 crore to its creditors as of September 2025. This is 7.02 per cent higher than Rs 45,281 crore, the amount of debt that stood resolved from its last status report in March 2025.

IL&FS has maintained the target of Rs 61,000 crore from the overall debt resolution of its assets, "which aggregates to approximately 61.39 per cent of the total external debt outstanding of Rs 99,355 crore", it said.

At the time of the crisis, the IL&FS Group comprised 302 entities as of October 15, 2018 in which 169 entities are/were domestic group entities, while the remaining were offshore group entities.

IL&FS Group, as of October 8, 2018, had availed aggregate external fund-based debt of Rs 94,215 crore, of the total external debt outstanding of Rs 99,355 crore. Of this, Rs 48,000 crore (almost 51 per cent) was availed by four key holding companies IL&FS, IFIN, ITNL and IEDCL. PTI KRH TRB

Sonu Sood asks people to respect ground staff amidst IndiGo flights crisis

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) Actor Sonu Sood urged people to be "responsible citizens" and to control their frustration following the massive operational crisis with IndiGo flights, which left many stranded at the airport for hours without any confirmation.

The operational crisis at the airline stemmed from its failure to adapt to new, stricter pilot duty and rest rules (FDTL), which were effective from November. The negligence led to massive pilot shortages, widespread cancellations, and significant delays, prompting DGCA action and passenger chaos earlier this week.

Sood shared a video on his X handle on Saturday. The actor added how his own family also faced an issue with the flight getting delayed for over four hours.

"My own family was travelling and they had to wait for 4 - 4.5 hours. Many flights didn't take off, many were cancelled, and many people couldn't attend weddings. Meetings were cancelled, events were cancelled... But the saddest thing is how people are shouting at the ground staff at the airports," he is heard saying in the video.

The 52-year-old actor said several videos have been circulating online which show people shouting at the ground staff at the airport.

"As responsible citizens, it's very important for us to make sure that we do not react to them because they are helpless and they do not have any answers. Please try to stay calm. Control your anger and respect them," he added.

"A delayed flight is frustrating, but remember the faces trying to fix it. Please be nice and humble to the IndiGo staff; they are carrying the weight of cancellations too. Let’s support them. @IndiGo6E," he wrote in the caption.

Sood's latest work is "Fateh", which marked his directorial debut. Also featuring Jacqueline Fernandez, the film released in January.

It revolved around a former special ops officer, Fateh Singh, living a quiet life in Punjab until a young village girl becomes a victim of a dangerous cybercrime syndicate. PTI ATR

Aamir Khan says talks with Lokesh Kanagaraj for new film still on

New Delhi, Dec 6 (PTI) Aamir Khan on Saturday said he is still in talks with filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj for a potential collaboration, amid speculations that their proposed big-scale action film has been shelved.

According to media reports, the project, expected to mark Kanagaraj's Bollywood debut, was called off following the lukewarm response to Aamir’s cameo in the director’s last release, “Coolie”. No official announcement was made for it.

Kanagaraj is among the leading directors in Tamil cinema, known for action blockbusters such as Kamal Haasan-starrer “Vikram”, “Leo” and “Master” with Vijay, and “Kaithi” featuring Karthi.

Speaking at the 23rd Hindustan Times Leadership Summit here, Aamir said the two are likely to meet soon for a narration.

“Lokesh and I are supposed to meet up. We spoke last month and he said he will come to Bombay at some point, and we will go through the narration. So, that is on the cards as of now,” the 60-year-old actor said.

In June, Aamir had told PTI that he and Kanagaraj were working on a “big-scale superhero action film” that was expected to go on floors in the second half of next year.

The actor was also set to reunite with “PK” director Rajkumar Hirani for a biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke, regarded as the father of Indian cinema.

However, according to media reports, the project has been put on hold due to creative differences. PTI KKP ATR OZ

Top directors were unwilling to work with me despite Qayamat Se Qamat Tak's success: Aamir Khan

New Delhi, Dec 6 (PTI) Actor Aamir Khan on Saturday said several leading directors in Hindi cinema were unwilling to work with him in the early years of his career despite the success of his debut film “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak” (QSQT).

Speaking at the 23rd Hindustan Times Leadership Summit here, Khan said that even after becoming an “overnight star” after his first film in 1988, he struggled to get offers from the filmmakers he admired.

“I started getting a lot of offers for films but I wasn't getting offers from the directors I wanted to work with. I had a list of directors I wanted to work with, but none of those directors approached me,” he said.

“At that time, even after a superhit like ‘QSQT’, you still had to establish yourself as a star before the A-graders (referring to the directors) wanted to work with you,” Khan said.

Khan said he signed eight to nine films at the time, believing it was modest compared to contemporaries who were doing several dozen films at once. But once shooting began, he realised he had made a “big mistake”.

“I’m not built to do two-three films together,” he said, as early releases such as “Love Love Love”, “Awwal Number”, “Tum Mere Ho” and “Jawani Zindabad” flopped at the theatres.

Stating that he was “unhappy” with his film choices that he made early in his career, the actor said he eventually realised the importance of doing films that have a “good script, right director and producer”.

“My sensibility did not match the number of people I was working with. These films started releasing and they started bombing, one flopped, then another flopped, then a third one too. I was labelled ‘one film wonder’ by the media,” he said.

The 60-year-old actor said that he realised his career was going down the drain in this manner, as he was so “unhappy” with what he was doing.

“I used to come home in the evening and cry. I swore to myself that never again will I compromise with my work unless I trust the director, the script is something I love, and the producer is someone who can produce and release it well,” he added.

Recalling when he was approached by Mahesh Bhatt for a movie during that career slump, Khan said even though he was keen to collaborate with the acclaimed director he rejected the offer as he was “unhappy with the script”.

“I was very happy when I got a call from Bhatt sahab, he was on the rise, he had made ‘Saaransh’, ‘Arth’, and ‘Naam’. I was relieved that finally one director I want to work with is reaching out to me,” he said.

But after hearing the script, the actor said he did not like it and was so disappointed that he told Bhatt “I’ll think about it” and went home.

“That night I couldn’t sleep, I was like, should I say yes to Bhatt sahab and compromise on what my heart says or should I say no and leave this opportunity to be working with him. Next day, I told him, "I can’t do the film as I didn't like the script,” he added.

“Bhatt sahab asked what I didn’t like and we started discussing it. But that film never happened,” the actor said.

Aamir further said the decision to not “compromise” on his belief gave him the courage to do films that he truly believes in.

“…What was important is that when I felt my career was over and nothing was going to save me, at that time I had conviction and courage to say no to a film that I didn’t believe in. That gave me the strength to take all the difficult decisions that I took in my career, like doing films, like ‘Lagaan’, ‘Taare Zameen Par’.”

He said had he compromised that day and said ‘yes’ to Bhatt his career would have had a different graph. “The fact that I was ready not to compromise at my worst (phase) gave me a lot of strength and that was a turning point for me.”

Aamir last appeared in “Sitaare Zameen Par”, directed by RS Prasanna. The film skipped an OTT release after completing its theatrical run. Khan, who also produced the movie, released it on YouTube via a pay-per-view (PPV) model for Rs 100. PTI KKP ATR OZ

Mathura (UP), Dec 6 (PTI) Late Bollywood star Dharmendra, fondly remembered as the 'He-Man' of Hindi cinema, was given an unusual tribute in a Mathura village where locals organised a ceremonial 'terahvin' on Saturday, drawing a crowd of nearly 10,000 people.

The event was held in Selkhera village of Baldev area, where fans performed a traditional 'havan', 'shantipath' and later organised a 'brahmabhoj' to honour the beloved actor. A screening of his iconic film 'Sholay' was also arranged as part of the tribute.

Gopal Singh Pehalwan and Lakhan Singh, two of the organisers and lifelong admirers of the actor, said the entire village considered the actor "a member of their own family". Written and directed by Jeethu Joseph, the film is produced under Aashirvad Cinemas, led by Antony Perumbavoor, according to a press release.

"For me, 'Drishyam' is more than a film — it has been a transformative journey for Indian cinema. Acquiring these worldwide rights to the original Malayalam franchise is a proud and emotional moment. With our global distribution strength, we intend to make 'Drishyam 3' one of India’s biggest international releases," Kumar Mangat Pathak, chairman of Panorama Studios said in a statement.

Dr Jayantilal Gada, director of Pen Studios, said the collaboration will ensure to make the film reach "global platform it truly deserves".

“With 'Drishyam 3', we continue our mission of taking exceptional Indian stories to the world. Our partnership with Panorama Studios strengthens this vision and ensures the film reaches the global platform it truly deserves," he said.

"Drishyam” chronicles the struggle of Georgekutty, played by Mohanlal, and his family, who come under suspicion when the son of the Inspector General of Police gets killed.

Produced by Antony Perumbavoor under the banner of Aashirvad Cinemas, the first film in the franchise was a box office hit when it released in 2013. Its sequel, “Drishyam 2”, which came out in 2022, ended on a cliffhanger.

Mohanlal said his character has stayed with him throughout. “In my thoughts, in the audience’s emotions, and in the silence between the lines. Returning to him feels like meeting an old friend with new secrets. I’m excited for the audience to see where his journey leads.”

Joseph added, “Stories like 'Drishyam' don’t end, they evolve. And seeing this partnership come together feels like the right step for the journey ahead. We’ve always believed this story deserved a global stage, and now, with this collaboration, it feels like the world is finally ready for Georgekutty’s next move.”

The path-breaking success and acclaim of “Drishyam” led to its remake in several languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Chinese (Mandarin), and Sinhalese. PTI ATR

Hugh Grant jokes he may be half Indian: 'My father was born in India'

New Delhi, Dec 6 (PTI) British star Hugh Grant on Saturday said his father was born in an obscure northern town in the Indian subcontinent, which may now be in Pakistan, and joked that this makes him “half Indian”.

The British star, known for romance classics such as "Four Weddings and a Funeral", "Notting Hill" and "Love Actually", was speaking at the 23rd Hindustan Times Leadership Summit here.

“My father was a soldier. In fact, he was born in India. I had to find his birth certificate, and it was really tough. It was some obscure town in the north of India. It may well be Pakistan now,” Grant, 65, said.

“He was born in either India or Pakistan. I guess that makes me half Indian, really," he added.

Grant also recalled his first visit to India in 1988 when he came to shoot for "La Nuit Bengali" (The Bengali Night) in Kolkata, then Calcutta.

"I shot a very arty film in 1988, French, 'La Nuit Bengali' in Kolkata and it never really had much of the release... but I thoroughly enjoyed being in Kolkata, although people said, 'Hugh, it is going to be a cultural shock for you.' and it was but I ended up loving it," he said.

The actor shared a funny story about the first driver he encountered in India.

"When I arrived, he introduced himself as Bishu and he looked like a 12-year-old. I think he might have been 13, and I said, 'You sure you can drive' and he said ' yes'. And within three weeks, he crashed quite badly. And he was fired.

"I didn't see him for quite a few months and then I bumped into him on the streets of Kolkata and I say 'Bishu, how are you ? What's happening ?' and he said, 'It's all good sir, I got a new job., I am now driving a school bus,' He was great," Grant remembered.

During his visit to the country, Grant said he met many people and fell in love with them.

"I sort of fell into Kolkata high society, I don't know how that happened. Because the French crew, the director, the crew, they all went very local, they started dressing local, they slept on local.

"I for some reason got swept up into Kolkata high society, went to cocktail parties and polo. I didn't know that life still existed anywhere. But it existed then in Kolkata. The Tollygunge Club and I went there to parties and people like Moon Moon Sen, I had a lovely time there."

Adapted from the semi-autobiographical novel by Mircea Eliade, "La Nuit Bengali" was set in 1930s Calcutta. Starring Grant and Supriya Pathak in the lead roles, the film follows a young European engineer who becomes entangled in a forbidden romance with the daughter of the traditional Bengali family hosting him.

The movie also starred cinema icons Shabana Azmi and the late Soumitra Chatterjee in pivotal roles.

Grant, who was in conversation with actor Rahul Khanna, was quizzed about his knowledge of Indian cinema.

"I have seen a bit of Satyajit Ray's films, we were using his studio and he is quite of genius. But I can't pretend I have seen a lot of Bollywood," he said.

In his early career, years before he became a heartthrob, Grant worked in "Maurice", a Merchant Ivory production, in 1987. The film was directed by acclaimed writer-director James Ivory, who produced the project with his frequent Indian collaborator and partner Ismail Merchant.

Recalling his experience of working with the duo, the actor said they were a "unique and wonderful pair".

"They made absolutely beautiful, very brave films. And I was extremely fond of them both and it's very sad that we have now lost Ismail. Jim of course going strong and winning Oscars. Making a film (with them) was interesting in many ways, largely because they never had any money at all and what money they had that suddenly disappeared in the middle of productions.

"Suddenly Ismail would borrow my mother's car for the evening and she would get it back only two weeks later or they would run out of money so Ismail would do cooking, he would just cook curry for the whole cast and crew. So it was unique in that way. Everyone who ever did one of their films ended up loving them... even though they have been slightly ripped off," Grant said. PTI ATR RB

Chinnaswamy Stadium will continue hosting IPL matches: D K Shivakumar

Bengaluru, Dec 7 (PTI) Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Sunday announced that Chinnaswamy Stadium will continue to host future IPL matches.

The announcement comes amid doubts over hosting the event in Karnataka following the June 4 stampede at the stadium, which occurred when a large crowd had gathered to celebrate the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s victory in IPL 2025.

Speaking to reporters after casting his vote in the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) presidential elections, Shivakumar said a new large stadium will also be constructed in the future.

"I’m a cricket lover. We will ensure that the accident in Karnataka does not happen again and hold cricket events at Chinnaswamy Stadium in a manner that upholds the honour of Bengaluru," the deputy chief minister said.

He added that the KSCA will operate the stadium within the framework of the law, with proper crowd management measures in place.

Shivakumar emphasised, "We will not shift the IPL elsewhere and will continue to hold it here at Chinnaswamy Stadium. This is the pride of Bengaluru and Karnataka, which we will retain."

When asked about women’s matches, he said the government will ensure opportunities for them as well. PTI GMS SSK

Saraswat clinches maiden super 100 title at Guwahati Masters

Guwahati, Dec 7 (PTI) Rajasthan's Sanskar Saraswat clinched his maiden Super 100 title after eking out a three-game victory over fellow Indian Mithun Manjunath in the men's singles final of the Guwahati Masters here on Sunday.

The 19-year-old from Jodhpur showcased grit and firepower while unleashing a barrage of smashes to outwit former national champion Manjunath 21-11, 17-21, 21-13 in an all-Indian final that lasted 50 minutes.

Saraswat, who trains at the National Centre of Excellence in Guwahati, has been making rapid strides on the domestic circuit. He won his maiden senior national doubles title alongside Arsh Mohammad in Bengaluru last year and had earlier claimed a junior singles crown.

The duo also finished runners-up in the under-19 event at the 31st Smit Krishna Khaitan Memorial Badminton Tournament in September last year.

Playing with his right leg heavily taped, Saraswat stayed marginally ahead at the outset before Manjunath clawed back to 7-7 in the opening game. While the rallies lacked prolonged exchanges, both players capitalised on each other's errors.

Saraswat carried a slim 11-9 lead into the interval before stretching it to 14-10 with a burst of attacking shots. Manjunath struggled to read his opponent's cross-court and down-the-line smashes as Saraswat surged to nine game points and closed out the opener comfortably.

The second game saw Saraswat continue on the offensive, racing to an 8-2 lead with his steep smashes leaving Manjunath under pressure. However, the Karnataka shuttler staged a strong comeback, reeling off five consecutive points to level at 7-8 and edging ahead 11-10 at the interval.

Momentum then swung decisively as Manjunath overturned a deficit to grab an 18-16 advantage before Saraswat's errors handed him three game points, which he converted to force a decider.

In the third game, Saraswat came out firing, storming to a 7-0 lead with aggressive intent. Manjunath managed to close the gap briefly, but Saraswat maintained control to take an 11-5 lead at the interval.

After the restart, his ability to get under the shuttle and unleash full-blooded smashes proved decisive as he stretched the lead to 14-6 and earned eight match points.

Saraswat sealed the contest on his second opportunity with a deep return.

Saraswat was introduced to the sport by his father Raj, a former national-level singles and doubles player.

After beginning his training at the Drona Sports Academy, Saraswat went on to win the under-13 national doubles title with Tushar Suveer and later partnered Bhuvan Singh to claim the under-15 national doubles crown in Bhubaneswar in 2019. PTI ATK AH

Clearly I am bad with DRS call, says Kuldeep after banter with Rohit

Visakhapatnam, Dec 7 (PTI) Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav admitted that he is "bad with DRS" appeals after his hilarious banter with senior pro Rohit Sharma formed a nice, little subplot of India's series-clinching victory against South Africa in the third ODI here.

Fielding at first slip, Rohit was chuckling as he intervened on at least three occasions to stop an excited Kuldeep from appealing animatedly and putting pressure on skipper KL Rahul to avail the Decision Review System (DRS) on Saturday.

"Clearly I am bad with DRS call. I feel that one DRS is reserved for me (laughs)," Kuldeep said in BCCI video.

"As a bowler, you always think that it's your wicket, it's out. But Rohit bhai, KL bhai, they are standing behind the wicket, so they have a better idea if the ball is missing the stumps, about the height and impact.

"But I always think that the batter is out," he added.

Kuldeep tore through the South Africa middle-order with four wickets to help India bowl out the opposition for 270 after they looked good for a total in excess of 325.

Kuldeep said, "There are only two DRS, so you need to have those people around to guide you correctly, otherwise you could end wasting the DRS. So I must give credit to them too for ensuring that the DRS option is used wisely and we don't end up thinking that we have wasted them.

"Rohit bhai has been there always, he clearly asks me what do I think about the line.

"As far height is concerned, I can make out but with line and impact... that is a very big call."

While Kuldeep and Prasidh Krishna shone with the ball, Yashasvi Sharma slammed his maiden ODI hundred to win the player of the match award after Rohit and Virat Kohli too struck fluent half-centuries in a nine-wicket victory for the home team. PTI AH AH ATK

Smriti Mandhana confirms "wedding has been called off", seeks privacy

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) Indian women's team vice-captain Smriti Mandhana on Sunday ended weeks of speculation surrounding her personal life, confirming that her wedding with music composer Palash Muchhal has been "called off". The star batter has urged fans and the media to respect the privacy of both families.

Mandhana, one of India's most prominent women cricketers, issued her first public statement on social media after rumours about her personal life had intensified over the past month.

"I need to clarify that the wedding is called off. I would like to close this matter here and implore all of you to do the same," she wrote.

She was supposed to marry Muchhal on November 23 but the wedding was postponed after Mandhana’s father, Shriniwas had to be hospitalised due to a heart ailment.

"Over the past few weeks there has been plenty of speculation around my life and I feel it is important for me to speak out at this time," she said in an Instagram post.

Calling herself a “very private person”, Mandhana said the need to set the record straight compelled her to speak.

The development comes days after singer Palak Muchhal spoke on the issue.

"I think the families have been through a very tough time. Like you just said, I would just want to repeat that we would like to believe in positivity at this time. We would like to spread positivity as much as we can. We are also trying to stay strong," she had said.

Both statements come against the backdrop of intensified social media discussions and unverified reports, prompting public figures to step in to curb conjecture.

Mandhana, 28, has been a central figure in Indian women’s cricket for nearly a decade, and her presence in the batting line-up has been crucial across formats.

With India set for a busy 2026 calendar, the left-hander reiterated that her professional commitments remain her priority.

"Thank you for all your support. It's time to move forward," her note concluded. PTI AT AT KHS

Gary Kirsten appointed consultant for Namibia men’s team

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) World Cup winning former India head coach Gary Kirsten has been appointed consultant for Namibia’s men’s national teams and will work alongside head coach Craig Williams in the build-up to next year's T20 World Cup.

The global showpiece is scheduled to be held in India and Sri Lanka in February-March 2026.

"It is indeed a privilege to work with Cricket Namibia. I have been thoroughly impressed with the dedication and determination to create a high-performance cricket environment," Kirsten said in a Cricket Namibia statement.

"Their new state-of-the-art cricket stadium is a testament to their commitment to making sure their national teams are competing with the best cricket countries in the world.

"Their senior men's national team is performing well, and I look forward to adding value to their preparation for the T20 World Cup in February next year."

A former South Africa opener, Kirsten took to coaching after retiring in 2004 and was appointed India’s head coach in 2007. Under his tenure, India famously won the 2011 ODI World Cup.

He later served as head coach of South Africa and has worked with several teams in T20 franchise leagues around the world. Most recently, Kirsten had a brief stint as head coach of Pakistan’s men’s team in 2024.

"Kirsten's appointment as consultant reflects Cricket Namibia's commitment to strengthening its high-performance environment and supporting the existing coaching structure," a statement from the board said.

"His blend of international playing experience, coaching success, and passion for player development brings valuable insight and added depth to the Eagles [men's national team] setup."

Namibia have qualified for each of the last three T20 World Cups in 2021, 2022 and 2024 and are also in contention for the upcoming edition. They will be one of the three host nations for the 2026 tournament along with South Africa and Zimbabwe. PTI ATK KHS

Batting order is overrated in white ball cricket: Gambhir hints at keeping chop and change policy

Visakhapatnam, Dec 7 (PTI) Gautam Gambhir’s penchant for shuffling cricketers has often come under sharp scrutiny, but the head coach insisted that “batting order is overrated” in white ball cricket, strongly hinting of him sticking to his trusted ways.

Forced by the combination, Ruturaj Gaikwad, a genuine opener, had to bat at No. 4 in the just-concluded ODI series, while all-rounder Washington Sundar has been a perennial floater in the line-up.

But Gambhir had his reasons.

“I think in a one-day format, you should know the template that you want to play with. I've always believed that in white-ball cricket, batting orders are very overrated, except the opening combination,” said Gambhir in the post-match press conference here after India sealed a 2-1 ODI series win over the Proteas.

“In Test cricket, obviously, you've got to have a fixed batting order, but it (batting order) is very, very overrated (in white ball formats),” he added.

To further drive in his point, he gave the example of Washington who has been wearing different hats in each match.

“See, you’re talking about someone who's got 100 at Manchester, a 50 at Oval who averages, what, 40-plus in Tests. Sometimes, you've got to look at balance as well. I know it's tough on someone like Washi, but then I think he's done an incredible job, batting at No. 3, No.5, No. 8.

“That's the kind of character he is, and that's the kind of character we want in that dressing room, who are willing to do everything for the team with a smile on his face, which me as a batter knows how tough it is,” said Gambhir.

“I'm sure he's going to continue doing that and we're going to keep developing him because he's got a massive future ahead for Indian cricket,” he added.

Gambhir acknowledged that dew played a massive role in shaping the outcome of all three ODIs in this series, but he was hardly surprised.

“We know that during this time of the year, toss can play a massive role because when you're bowling first or when you're bowling second, there's a lot of difference. Our bowlers felt that in the first two games.

“We saw what our batters did when we were batting second. So yes, there is no doubt that there is a lot of difference. But we still had to play good cricket today,” he said.

However, Gambhir felt that dew might not impact matches during the upcoming five-match T20I series.

“Look, it probably won't affect T20s much because both teams will get dew, as in one-day cricket, the team that bowls first doesn't get dew at all. The team that bowls second gets a total of 50 overs of dew.

“But in T20, when the match starts at 7 o'clock, the dew is the same for the team. Maybe the team that bowls second will get a little more dew, but both teams will get it,” he added. PTI UNG KHS

Thane man gets 20-year RI for sexually assaulting minor girl

Thane, Dec 7 (PTI) A Thane court has sentenced a man to 20 years' rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl in 2021, which led to her pregnancy, observing that the crime was "heinous" and must be dealt with stringently.

Additional Sessions Judge-3, DS Deshmukh, in the judgment on Friday, said the act of the 34-year-old accused, who is married and also has a son, has to be viewed seriously and he is not entitled to leniency.

The court convicted the accused, Sahid Mohammad Ramzan Hasmi, under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act section 5 (aggravated penetrative sexual assault) and also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him.

A copy of the order was received on Sunday.

Special Public Prosecutor Sanjay Londge told the court that the victim had lodged a complaint alleging that in May 2021, the accused, who resided in her neighbourhood in the Kashimira area here, sexually assaulted her after offering to drop her home and later calling her to his house.

The accused also threatened to kill her if she informed anyone about the offence.

The victim suffered severe stomach pain in July 2021, and a subsequent medical examination in August revealed she was pregnant.

She initially informed about the incident to another man. Later, after her mother took her into confidence, she told her about the offence committed by the accused.

After hearing both sides, the judge said the act done by the accused is "heinous".

The prosecution has proved that the accused had committed aggravated penetrative sexual assault on the victim twice, due to which she became pregnant, and also threatened her, the court observed.

The judge rejected the defence's claim that the case was false due to a monetary dispute.

In view of the oral evidence of the victim and her mother and also clear documentary evidence- the DNA report - on record, this defence taken by the accused is not acceptable, he said.

"It is pertinent to note here that for such a lame reason, nobody can use his minor child to implicate the person in a false case by levelling such type of allegations," the court noted.

Regarding the severity of the crime and sentencing, the judge said, "The act of sexual assault on the child is to be viewed seriously and such offences are to be dealt with stringent manner."

In this case, the accused, being a married person and having a small son, "committed aggravated penetrative sexual assault on the victim and impregnated her," the court said.

"The act of the accused is heinous. It has to be viewed seriously. Considering the submissions of both sides and the nature of offence, the accused is not entitled for leniency," it said.

The court also directed that the fine amount, if recovered, be given to the victim. The case has been recommended to the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) for compensation to the victim. PTI COR GK
